I Am So Frustrated!

I think being a Basenji slave we all say this at one time or another but seriously…I am so close to putting a sign around Kiya's neck which says "Free to any home" :rolleyes:
Twice now in the span of a week Kiya has had an upset stomach. We leave her with Chance in the downstairs portion of our house which is all hardwood floors. She will find any way to either jump over the baby gate to get to the lower portion of the house or crawl under the other baby gate to get upstairs where the bedrooms are.
Last week Kiya decided to jump over the gate to go downstairs but had a horrific accident and pooped all over the carpet! It wasn't like a poop here or there...it was everywhere! It took me over an hour to clean the carpet. Oah...I almost forgot...she also pulled out my hardwood blinds and smeared poop all over them too!!!! It was so bad I had to take a quick video recording just to show Alex so he would believe me. I'll spare you the video since its pretty gross. BUT...Seriously invest in a Bissell Spot Bot! They are AMAZING!!!!
Yesterday when I came home from work Kiya decided to crawl under the baby gate and go upstairs and potty all over the stairs too! Again...a severe mess which took over an hour to clean. :mad:
She could of gone anywhere on my hardwood floors which would of been a breeze to clean up but NOOOOOOOO. She would rather squeeze herself under a freegin gate just to go upstairs and make a mess for me to have to clean.
I wanted to kill her. Not to mention she acts like she did nothing. The only way I could tell that it was her was the poop smear on her back end :rolleyes:
I just love coming home to a house smelling like a porta-potty. gggrrrrrr :mad: -
Yes, sometimes we just have to love them because it's immoral to kill them. :-)
As we've said many times… Basenjis are a lot like children. LOL :-P

I think God made basenjis extra cute so people won't kill them when they misbehave! Haha. How can you stay mad at those cute wrinkley innocent faces? :p

Honestly… thinking that a baby gate would keep her "contained" if she wanted out... doesn't surprise me... that is why we had "real" gates made for the house.... and made sure they are tall enough with no horzional plane that they can "hook" feet on to climb over and flush to the floor so they can't get under... We figured since the basenji are here to stay... might as well have "nice" well constructed wooden gates...

That sounds miserable Vanessa. How're you going to keep Kiya from getting over and under the gates. That's one thing I never mastered with Katie.

The new "baby gate" which we just installed is 4ft high metal gate which we installed to fit snug up against the wall right before the stairs which lead downstairs. They are vertical poles so Kiya can't climb it. Kiya can't jump over that now :):):)
As for the gate which leads upstairs which Kiya could worm herself under, we just added an additional piece of metal to block her which we bolted. She hasn't figured a way around that just yet but god only knows. She tries her hardest to get under it.
You really have to "try" to outsmart a basenji and 9 times out of 10….they outsmart us! :confused:

We still haven't been able to contain Blaze in the large dog run at the farm. After burying it into the ground so he couldn't dig under, then adding more links so he couldn't squeeze through, then putting a bolt through the door so he couldn't open it, then putting virticle privacy strips so he couldn't climb, then discover he could still climb up in the corners… we put the tarp over top, he ate it, then we put an extra foot of chainlink on the top that is bent inwards so he literally has to climb upside down to get over it... He escaped again.
We are back to the drawing board, and he's running free... -

Everyone should always remember that basenjis have a strong aversion to messing their living area. It is, therefore, only natural that if they have to go potty when alone in the house they will try to escape the area that they are confined in so they can potty elsewhere. It is also not surprising that once she has escaped she then finds carpet to go on since its texture is most like grass and dogs are substrate specific in their potty habits.
Understanding all of this about canine behavior does not make it any less frustrating coming home to an accident in the house but it does help us to understand their frustration when they find themselves in this situation. It also can be a starting point to figure out a way to prevent the problem in the future.

hmmm, maybe you should get a good sized chunk of shag carpet, put up a cardboard wall around it and have that in thier area… think it would work? I'm almost tempted to try. I hate putting him in his kennel when we go to work, but the poop patrol is too much work after work!

Still the same…Upset tummy. We've cut back on the food to allow her stomach to settle. She is drinking plenty of water and still very active. Hopefully her tummy ache will pass soon. My poor carpets can't take much more of this. :(

It's awful isn't it? Cleaning up after these furkids are sometimes worse than doing it for babies and toddlers. Last week, Daisy had a spell throwing up in different places - on the carpeting! I had to wrangle her out the door, but by then she was done. A week or two before Daisy's episode, Duke had one…Everything in his belly evacuated on the carpet - ewwwww yuk! I would love to replace my carpeting, but I won't - yet.

They eat the same meals but I think this is from strangers giving her treats behind our backs at the dog park.
Chance's tummy has been a little upset too but he unlike Kiya will hold it until we get home. :) -

Works wonders for tummy issues, as for behavioral issues…um I dunno
