Got to get that bunny!

Basenji Talk
  • We were all outside this weekend, and Jack was on his little tie-line cable and a little bunny hopped out from under a bush to say hello.

Well, Jack saw it, and I expected him to go crazy, since the bunny was sitting out of reach, just watching us. And, sure enough Jack ran over to the end of his tie-line, not really straining or anything…..but his tail was wagging, and I can't be sure, but I thought I saw a puppy grin....

Is it possible that Jack wanted to play with the bunny? I always figured that he would just want to eat it, high prey drive and everything.

I have no desire to go out and get any small animals and see how they do together- I'm just curious about the tail wagging....

  • Sometimes they wag as happiness or sometimes to release stress…
I hope it was the former!
    Baby bunnies are the cutest!

  • Oh- no- I don't think it was stress- he looked like he wanted to play! I expected him to want to eat the bunny:eek: :D

  • As crazy as it sounds, if Jack is anything like Shango, he just wanted to play with the baby bunny.

Shango loves to chase things (rabbits, squirrels, ANYTHING that runs) but when they are babies, he seems to know. We've come across baby birds, rabbits, kittnens and puppies and his behavior changes! It's almost like he knows he can't play as rough with them! It's adorable. He's so paternal.

Jack probably just wanted to play!

  • Don't forget that the most favorite game to play for most Basenji's is, guess what? Chase games! They love to chase other dogs, and BE chased too. That's the favorite activity for our boy at the dog park. If he can find another dog that understands how to play the 'chase game' he's in heaven! And heaven help you if want to get ahold of him around the house. If I step after him, he immediately darts away and looks back as if to say "come-n-get me" tail wagging the whole time!

  • can't wait to be bale to get that back yard fenced in and he can chase the squirrel, birds and bunnies all over the place!

  • I would have to say… given a chance, he would NOT play with the bunny... IMO... it would become "lunch".... and yes, many times tail wagging is not only "happiness"... mine will "wag" at the lure bags... and it is NOT for play... especially if there is a "real" skin in those bags....

  • Thanks Pat- that was what I was wondering…..I knew he wasn't stressed out, but he looked so happy to see him....was wondering if it was "Oh, lets play!" or "Pass the mustard!"

I would bet "Pass the Mustard!"….

  • At our house it would be…."I wonder if you taste like chicken?" ;)

That sounds just like my boy! He will grab something he knows he isn't supposed to have [i.e. a sock] & make sure that I see him then just start running through the house. If I don't chase him, he will drop it after he notices I am not chasing him. Haha. It cracks me up!

Thank you Suzee. They had fun with the squirrel after they found it. I like watching that Python Hunters show that is on OLN about the invasive species of snakes in FL. It is a good show and it does show us how we have disrupted the ecosystem by introducing non native species to different parts of the world. I have not seen a squirrel in the yard for a couple of weeks now, it's great! Once I get the rest of the acreage fenced in they can go into the back pasture and hunt mice through the grass. We don't have a lot of rabbits out here but in the summer time I will take pics of their new place to run!

Nothing cuter than baby baroos. If you can get him right as he is about to do it you might be able to give it a command. I was able to train both Ruby and Brando to give it on command for their dinner. It is pretty funny because Brando's baroo is so completely different than Ruby's …hers is so melodic, and his is so deep and masculine.

Hello! I wish to comment on my dog Pearl. She is Very quiet, hardly a sound. I try to encourage her to speak. She does a lot of nonverbal communication. About the child issue. Pearl came to us as a puppy. My kids (12 & 13 at the time) spent time with her, the neighbor kids played with her, and she loves kids. No problems socializing with young people. I guess the point is, your pup will love anyone who treats it well and cares for it. At 5 , I'm sure your child understands the importance of being gentle with dogs. Pearl has done her fair share of chewing. Interesting what she likes. She will be 2 in October, and is better, but she has lots of bones! I love Pearl, however, I am easy going, and enjoy taking her on walks, playing with her, and having her as a family member. Its up to you what you want from a dog. Pearl is pretty free, and thats what I like!

There could be a thread on the things we do to registered names– Sol's is 'Solid Gold' but I call him 'Solomon' because he's a deep thinker, or 'Solace' because he is a solace to me-- I like the 'Ruby' adaptation! Kris

Well, it started when I was out with my 22yr. old son at the mall. He said, "Hey, Mom lets look at the dogs in the petstore ", I replied, "I don't have time besides your Dad has too many ideas what a dog has to be like for us to get one", I'll never find a dog like he wants". That was 3 yrs. ago this Jan., and I had never heard of a Basenji. I called DH about 3 times the night I found Sahara to persuade him we needed this dog, but she was very expensive so it took some work talking him into me buying her. She is owned by my son, me and my husband, she lives with my husband and I. She is the best dog I have ever owned, and I have had many through my lifetime. I would never get another dog from a pet store (didn't know about puppy mills)but I would have not known of this breed if I hadn't stopped and looked that night. My husband loves this dog so very much, he buys her whatever she wants or needs. I love her also, she is my joy and I can't stand to be from her for very long, we just got back from a trip and it was so hard missing her. My son said that she didn't eat very good while we were gone and was very destructive in the house. Guess she missed us as well!
