Here are a couple of links that will give you some information that many have already said - read this and think about what you are planning and if it fits this criteria. I will also suggest that you think about timing - right now people are giving up their dogs because they cannot afford to keep them or have lost their homes - shelters are full. From a purely ecconomic and marketing standpoint - you may not find homes for them so be prepared to keep 4 - 6 puppies forever cause once they are past the cute puppy stage - they are harder to place.

You would want to make sure that the male and female you are using have had the following done:
FANCONI test - you would want both of them to be clear.
EYES - clear for PRA and PPM too - no history of cateracts or Glacoma.
Thyroid - you will want to make sure you know the results of this so you can plan breeding to non-thyroid affected dogs if possible.
You will need to have at least $3,000 set aside to cover and emergency c-section - or have at least that much on your credit card. Should your bitch be in crisis - the first thing Emergency Vets do is check your credit.
You will want to research pedigrees so you have a better handle on what lines might not go well together temperament wise.
Do you know enough about their behavior and training to be a resource for the people who would buy your puppies? If not - you are not doing the breed a favor.
Puppies need dew claws removed at 2-3 days of age and at least 2 -3 sets of shots prior to being able to go to new homes. The litter will have to be registered with the AKC so that you have puppy papers in time to go with new owners.
Legal nuts and bolts: Make sure that you are able to financially comply with the provisions of your states Puppy Lemon Law. You will need a business ID number and will need to keep track of revenue and expendetures. (be prepared for audits cause IRS loves to audit kennels)
The largest problem that you will have is; I don't know a single breeder who does all of the above who will sell you a dog or a bitch for your stated purposes. If you are going to show and be involved in the breed and want to learn from someone - you may find someone willing to work with you but not to churn out puppies that will end up in shelters of puppy mills and we will have to rescue.
So you decide - if you want to really be involved in the breed - happy to work with you. If you are going to only breed - not with my dogs.
re: making money you bet I've made money - I figure about $250 profit breeding intermitentely for 25 years. I suppose if you add in the 7 years of care for one of my oldies that someone just got tired of - that would probably be gone. Then there are the rescues that I've taken in and provided care and food for - so maybe I haven't made any money at it.

I have to say, I'm glad this thread was posted. I'm THINKING about MAYBE in the not so near future (atleast 3-4 years from now) looking into breeding basenjis. I've been trying to absorb and learn as much as possible about the breed itself before I even think about researching breeding. I was also going to see if I could "apprentice" myself to a local breeder & I've signed up as a BRAT volunteer. So even if this person didn't get the response they were looking for, this is EXACTLY the starting point I wanted…. I was going to wait 6 months to a year before I started a thread about it, but I guess there's no time like the present to learn. So all of you who posted with advise & links & info, I appreciate it, even if the starter of this thread doesn't. :)

I wouldn't try to comment on breeding protocol, but I sure didn't like your comment about getting 2 litters out of her and then placing her in a permanent home. Shouldn't your dog be your pet first?

My friend, and fellow Basenji owner, I believe you have directed your remarks to the wrong person. I only have 1 B, and am not a breeder. My B is a pet only. I never had or have any intentions on breeding.

I believe Roxygirl's comments were directed at Lili, the original poster on this thread who said that she hoped to find a male and female, get two litters out of the female, then spay and find her a permanent home.
Not sure why you felt it was directed at you, as your post is a good bit farther up the thread! :confused:

Anyone who wants to learn what quality breeders do to have quality dogs would be welcome with open arms..
The discussion on making $$ and dumping the breeding bitch was so offensive to me..I just couldn't believe that this was this persons major concern…
I think this forum is helpful to those who care about the dogs and want to learn.
I learn something everyday from this group.
I only hope this person, who posted this tread can't find dogs to use in the manner they wrote about...

Possibly, we had some members that were removed from the forum for not respecting us and our forum guidelines. They periodically show up back here in one form or another trying to stir things up.
I don't think Lili is a troll though, just stumbled on a sensitive topic.

I wouldn't guess it was a troll since they have been a member since Nov of last year & have made posts unrelated to breeding…
However, Sharron brings up a great point. Although this thread started a bit of conflict, many wonderful & legitimate points about becoming a breeder have been mentioned. This thread has served as a general what to do if you are serious about wanting to breed & has probably [& IMO hopefully] scared off some people who are not in it for the right reasons. I can assure you I would NEVER breed! Haha.

Well, I sure hope they read and absorb what these long time breeder folks know and are sharing.
Otherwise, I will be seeing their dogs down the line, and I sure don't want that.

That is why I responded in a civil manner :) I was just pointing out that there are some people out there who get their kicks by stirring up trouble on boards like this…they actually have competitions to see who can get the most responses.
I also don't think it was anybody who was kicked out of the forums...at least none of the people that I know who were kicked out (of course, I don't know how many people were kicked out)...they don't have any wish to return; or stir up trouble.
