Having Some Issues

Basenji Talk
  • Soooo, Sorry I have been away so long. We have had another group of visitors (so lucky we live in Florida! Ha!) In the summer we often turn into a Holiday Inn for our family as we live in the middle of the state, close to everything! Anyway - our little girl does not seem to crazy about having all these visitors! Last week we purchased two blow up mattresses for extra places for people to sleep. I made all of the beds in prep. for them being at our house in a couple of hours. Well in a matter of 30 minutes, Trixie jumped up on every freshly made bed and went pee!!!!!!! I could have killed her! I think I understand why she did this (marking her territory?) but I of course had to strip everything and wash and remake beds. Has anyone else ever had this problem? Gotta love her even though she drives me CRAZY!!!!!!!

  • Thankfully [& knock on wood] Dallas has only ever peed the bed twice & both times were when he was sleeping as a pup & just didn't wake up. We moved into a new house but no marking the beds so I have been lucky.

Sometimes you just want to rip your hair out after they do these things huh? Haha.

  • When I would travel for work, Dakota would jump up and pee on my bed every time he saw me packing. After having to do laundry in the middle of the night a few times, I ended up packing a day or two early so I had extra time to get the sheets washed.

  • When my husband packs to go out of town, he does it behind closed doors. You learn that lesson pretty quickly when you have to rewash your clothes the night before going out of town because your dog pees in your suitcase.

As far as visitors, though, my parents were just in town for a week, and Jack decided he liked them more than us and even started sleeping in their room instead of with us. I think this was mainly because I still had to work the first two days they were here, so they let him out and played with him during the day while I was gone. Can your visitors spend a little bit of time with your dog when they first arrive to let her know that they are a valuable addition to the house- aka…they will pet her (and possibly treat her)?

Thats the problem they are all going to WDW and all of the attractions so they are also not home. Don't get me wrong she loves on anyone that comes in the house - (and tried to get in the suitcases etc.) But I was just thinking it's her way of saying hey this is mine. I guess thats the biggest problem Trixie thinks the entire house is hers!!!

  • Any way to babygate the areas off, so the folks can step over but she can't?

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

The article seems to be pretty much old news, a rehash of the DNA study by Ostrander in 2004. I haven't actually seen the article but from what was sent to me, it really is just that info. (I was not nice– went to the Pharoah hounds when the dna study came out to gloat as the study said really NEW breed that simply looks like old one that died out.) I can't find the study, though I have it saved somewhere so here is blurb: http://work.colum.edu/~amiller/dogs.htm That said, someone emailed me to post it and I forgot to. .. The mail said: Pass it along. Everyone needs to see this month's new NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC with the DOG on the cover (one of those Weimerhiners with a POODLE cut glued on!). The topic inside is the GENETICS of dogs and it has some AMAZING stuff about BASENJIS…including a beautiful head photo, a surprising genetic analysis (YES, our dogs are REALLY ancient, and SURPRISE, they are closer to CHOWS then they are to Pharaoh Hounds!!!! AND....OOOPS....Pharaoh Hounds and other "ancient breeds".. REALLY AREN'T!!! They are MODERN DNA dogs, created to LOOK like ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs!!! OURS..however, DO have VERY ancient genes (to the point where our B's are basically strange looking GRAY WOLVES if you look at the gene breakdown. WOW. There is also an amazing side bar full page story about the FOREVER dog and while they call them "no breed at all" (the dogs in African Villages)...well, look at the photo for yourself!!! Seems these dogs are NOT FERAL, but actually just "wild dogs" that have existed on the fringe of human society for Eons now. Part domestic, part wild...(all nuts, as we know) and indeed ancient. This is one edition we ALL need to own.<<<< For a cute interactive map : http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/dogs-that-changed-the-world/interactive-map-discover-ancient-breeds/1282/

It's a very well-written article and I think it accurately describes the basenji's idiosyncrasies that we all know and love and that the average person would find frustrating. I think the take-home message for those who don't know basenjis is that they should educate themselves more before taking the "plunge". Personally, I was thrilled to see a b/w pictured. My only complaint is that the main cover dog wasn't a basenji!

I think our dogs are trying to tell us they are lacking fiber in their diet in some shape or form. Kleenex (new and used), Paper Towels, Toilet paper, greeting cards, books (especially ones human toddlers have nibbled on first), cardboard boxes… what are they? Part woodchuck?!
