Is Your B Afraid Of Wet Grass?

Behavioral Issues
  • I know…odd question.
Every morning I take the dogs outside to potty and the grass is still wet from the sprinklers. I have to drag the dogs to the grass to get them to go potty. My boy immediately picks up his hind legs as if he did not want to get them wet. He hops from foot to foot. I wish I had a video camera because it is quite hilarious to watch! Where I live they are still building houses and the construction workers laugh when they see him doing this. I just stand there shaking my head and rolling my eyes.

  • We have a screened in porch, that leads into the fenced in back yard. Most of the time when it's wet we have to take the dogs out on leashes because they won't leave the porch. This morning I just let them out, Leo went in the yard like a good boy, Nexa ran straight into the garage and made me chase her around the cars. I had to carry her out into the wet grass and only then would she pee. The other day, it stopped raining so we let the dogs out. Nexa wanted to eat the grass, but not get her paws wet, so the reached like a giraffe from the concrete munching on the grass she could reach.

  • Jack is weird- he hates wet grass, yes, but he really isn't a huge fan of grass in general. There are lots of gravel areas around the comples where we live, and that is where he prefers doing his business. Ahh, the city dog…

  • Sahara doesn't hate grass she just doesn't want to get her feet wet, which is probably what your B is doing by bringing up its foot. Sahara has done this many times, walk, pick up foot, walk, pick up other foot. I have to put her on a leash and drag her out to pee when it has been raining, sometimes she pees on rocks to avoid the wet grass, and if it needs mowing, forget it!!!!

  • Bitty will absolutely not put a foot on grass early in the morning when it is wet with dew. She races as fast as she can up and down the driveway, searching for any spot that is not wet. The other morning she found a small pile of cut grass from where the neighbor boy didn get all of it swept off the pavement and very carefully baxcked up to it an peed on that pile.

  • Sounds like I have 2 easy basenjis  at least as far as going on wet grass. Morning dew is nothing to them. In fact, if it is raining (but not a downpour) they don't mind that either. Now don't get me wrong, they won't hang out and play in the rain, but they will take a 2 mile walk and run off the porch on their own to do their business…they're pretty easy that way. If it is pouring, I have to carry Ruby off the porch so she can run under and potty and then she'll run back up on her own...Brando either goes on his own or is agreeable to being led down by a leash.

  • Mine is pretty much like yours Vanessa! I have to literally drag her onto the wet grass from the back patio.. she will tip toe around on the edge of the concrete.. trying not to touch the grass! Thats one of the reasons I call her my little princess (she doesnt like getting off the couch to go out and pee either!)

  • Tayda and Lenny lick and eat the wet grass…..

  • Cory and Jayden loathe wet grass….especially Jayden. Cory will at least get off the patio long enough to pee. Jayden uses the patio. And he thinks the flower bed next to the patio with its nice dry pine straw is his personal potty! That is where I have to do most of my pooper-scooping.

@saralars: Yes this is true, I don't know anything for sure. I am just going on the owner's word that this was a pup from one of the puppy mill rescues and that they got her from a foster home. I am pretty sure I will get a 'mind your own business' from them if I ask which rescue they got her from. I will ask tonight though. Do most rescues come with a chip? I could get her to my vet for a scan…but not sure if I will just get owner info. or rescue info. from that. First, I will see if I can get an answer from them about rescue (which one) and then go from there. FAILING to me equals bringing her here for a month and not being able to help her with house breaking and in the process get attached to her and have it all be for nothing if I failed to do it. Thank you for your reply and common sense insight. I am a rescuer, a fixer! Looking at the big picture I don't want to enable them to keep on doing this. I can appreciate your position and the fact that you do not want to enable these people to keep doing something like this again. I guess I just have a different view of what rescue or what a rescuer is. In my view rescue or being a rescuer is about being a facilitator who helps retrieve animals out of situations that are unhealthy, unsafe, or unfit. Then that facilitator makes sure the animals health needs are met and attempts to find safe haven and stable situation for that animal where they will be loved, cared and provided for. I can appreciate you wanting to train this animal by helping to housebreak it but as I said in my other post, I think there are bigger problems here than just Pee. Jason

Thanks for the info! Yes we just got over the rain for the most part,,,,,,,thank goodness! What part of Maryland are you from? My aunt lives in Cumberland and the last time we were there we went to Rahobath beach (not sure of the spelling). We had a great time except for the DC traffic – we here in Southeastern Ohio are NOT use to that type of traffic! It was funny once my cousin (from Cumberland) came in town for a visit and we were going down one of our main drags on a Sat. morning and I said "Man,,I cant believe this traffic,,,,,its awful!" and she laughed and said I didnt know what traffic was! Well ,,,,,,,,,she was right,,,,,,,I couldnt imagine dealing with the DC traffic every day. About the furbabies though,,,,,,,they seem to be getting familiar with each other. Only a few minor scuffles today over a rawhide I forgot to get out of the backyard . Also, the marking has seemed to end-- we were a little worried. Lastly, the eating in there crates thing has worked out except our Bella (1st BRAT dog) has been dealing with some seperation issues again after we left her for the weekend to drive to Missouri to get Wrigley. Anyway, hopefully we will be one big happy family! One last thing, kudos to you and your wife for fostering so many dogs. My husband and I are considering volunteering for BRAT after this spring. My son is a senior and I am afraid as we get closer to the spring things will get crazy around here with all of his senior stuff.

Sahara knows what to do, I always say to her, "Go Potty, Be a Good Girl!!! She looks at me like as if to say, "You gotta be kidding, get my sweet paws wet, out of the question"! I use to just let her out the front door and she would got immediately to the grass and pee, now she won't !!!!! It is becoming a tug of war, I will carry her out on the leash and she will try to get to the front of the house, so she can stand on the sidewalk, or pull to get to her doggie door. I didn't have time to take her out this morning, have to get up earlier to do this. I didn't find any wet carpet today so I guess she went outside. The saga continues, these Basenjis are strange creatures!!!!! Thanks for your suggestions, I will try them!!!!!
