Tri 3yo needs rescued- Ohio

Basenji Rescue
  • Pat, I have no ideas to help.
    Do you??

  • I contacted America's Basenji Rescue and explained the situation to them, hopefully I will hear back from them soon.. Thanks for your help sharron and pat!

  • This is such a tough one.
When I got dogs such as this one, I only had 2 ways to go.
Keep the dog at my house and manage the biting behavior or
putting the basenji to sleep, which is awful…
    Good luck on this.
    Do let us know.

No, I don't, as I understand this boy is with a BRAT person and bit them, so they will not place him. I did give her another possible group to contact.

  • I do so hope this group can help.
This is hard to see/know about.
I am praying he gets another break.

  • Thanks Sharron- We are trying to work someone out.. Dont know whats gonna happen yet, but i will let you know.. fingers crossed he will get a second chance..

  • If we were not already up to the allowable limit for dogs in KC I would love to try and turn him around. Our Jindo, Sami, was also a man hater to begin with and in a 45 pound dog it is a little more serious than with a B. I have to admit that it took a while and a lot of patience but Sami is a big lover dog now. I cannot even begin to count the number of times she bit me over the first year or 2. It just takes a lot of love and understanding.

  • Its one thing for someone like you or I to take on one of these dogs.
We have had b's like this before and know what you have to do and the risks.
But the general public…well, that is a whole other thing.
I am still praying this dog finds a home like ours.

  • @DiegosMom:

This is not my dog, but I know of a purebred Tri basenji that is most likely going to need a new home.. I have met him and he was very sweet and playful.. His major behavioral problem is aggression to men.. He was abused by his owners ex-husband, so now he has a fear of males.. He has biten males, but is a sweetheart with females.. he has also not been around children, so he can only go to a home with females, no men or kids.. I know its probably going to be near impossible to find him a homelpd7@hotmail.com
there would be no fee involved, he is nuetered and UTD on shots/meds..

I might be interested in this basenji. I would gladly take him before he would be put to sleep. Please keep me informed.
    Fran and Tokalosh

  • I so hope someone can give this boy a chance.

I rescued a young Sheltie/Basenji mix many years ago from a Columbus OH shelter for BEAR-Basenji Education and Rescue. She was trouble for the shelter and was kept in a separate area. She loved to lure course and she also would go after balls and bring them back to you! Looked just like a Basenji but with longer fur and her tail was not tightly curled. Dr. Tracy used to joke that we could trim her and get an ILP number from AKC! She found an excellent home. Jennifer

I would take her in a heartbeat if I had room.. unfortunately I'm pushing my limits with my father already, as I've saved a few cats while living with him again. She sounds like a wonderful dog. I have no doubt that the bites were provoked. Dogs, especially Basenjis, can be very sensitive. If you don't understand that you're dealing with an animal that has feelings too, you're in trouble. I will keep her in my prayers. May she find the best fur-ever home!

No matter what size bed you have, the dogs always seem to end up with 3/4 of it!

Your very welcome…I hope you have a good time. The thing to remember, if you get a jerk who comes by, is to be polite and just listen to them. They really don't care what you have to say, just want to vent and see a reaction. I always smile, say, oh, I am so sorry you had that happen to you...and then just get busy talking to someone else. BUT mostly its just good fun with very nice folks who want to talk dogs.

I posted a new thread re 2 of these b's who are having issues in their foster home and need help. I will share it with you all. 2- 3 yr old b's need fosters/homes, from pm bust –------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a pair of the b's who were taken from the puppymill that closed. We really need a smart basenji home to foster and or adopt. Sharron I imagine they will be open to be moved to any near by states. Wilma (brindle) and Wanda (red and white), both three years old and from the SD group, are currently being fostered in central LA. They are very afraid of men and not doing well in their current foster home. If anyone in the southern states, TN or AR would be willing and able to foster them both together, please notify me. I would like to place them in a foster-to-adopt home if available. If you do not live in the area listed but can help with transportation to your location I will consider moving them out of the area. If you are traveling through LA and would not mind a couple furry passengers, let me know. They ride well in crates.
