Basenji's that Swim?

Member Introductions
  • Yes, there are B's that swim. There is one that Dock Dives and has done very well, and one of my pups that I replaced close to me, goes to the beach regularily and swims with their ChowX.

  • Our B has to go swimming very other day

  • I had one that as soon as she saw water whether a pool or a river she would dive straight in. She did this naturally. Some of mine don't mind water but I don't think they'd swim.

Some years ago I was walking mine in the woods and was passing a pool covered in green algae. Adonis obviously thought at first it was grass! He ran over it for several yards (walking on water) then suddenly realised what it was and sunk!! He then swum back to us. He never showed an inclination to swim after that. I think all animals are able to swim if necessary but not from choice.

  • My B girl, Bandit, LOVES the river. She's never "swam" but will go in past her belly. I think she is part lab because she will put her WHOLE HEAD underwater to pick up a rock or a stick and come up snorting. She is over 9 and this never ceases to CRACK ME UP!!!! But, I take her to the Cedar River just about every weekend, rain or shine, since she was 9 weeks old. She will run back and forth in the water, chasing whatever I throw for her. My BRAT boy, Hunter, looks on MORTIFIED. God forbid he get his piggy-toes wet!!! Bandit is the biggest Ragamuffin (just like me!!!!).

  • I've had two that like water. One of them would jump off our dock after water skiers. My others have been quite capable of swimming, but didn't like it much. :)

  • My 2 B's don't swim or go near cold water.
But, when they smell awfully of dead bird after a scent masking action, we take them into the shower and use lots of puppy shampoo to get them clean - they totally relax when they feel the warm water - no problem!

  • Now see, my baby HATES baths no matter what. He's refused pepperoni to bet him to like baths. PEPPERONI!! But take him to the creek he will be winning and cry that the water is so cold but won't say out of it. Silly boy

  • JaBok is a sugar foot He doesn't even want to get his feet wet If it is raining it is a war to get him out to do his important business. Than the first thing he does when back in is lick his feet dry. If I take him out in the water he will resist with all his ferocity and when I let him go he swims straight to shore really well. He gets out shakes and the looks at me as if I were crazy for being in the water. When it is hot he will go in the water up to his chest voluntarily though. When it comes to baths it is war again. For the most part I only bath him when he roles in the horses droppings. After a couple of baths for this deed he has stopped rolling in the clods. He actually hasn't had a bath in years and he seems to keep himself really clean. So clean that when asked for a cleaning fee at motels I say no way that he is much cleaner than me and if they insist I find another motel.

  • Loki can swim, quite well actually. We put him in Puppy Pre K-9 at 11 weeks and he spent his Saturdays at Daycare receiving additional training, including swimming in their dock diving pool. He just won't go in voluntarily, until today! We were at the dog park and there was this female Labradoodle that he absolutely adored. She kept going in the water to retrieve her toys and he wanted to be with her so badly that he actually took to following her in and swam out a good ways quite a few times. I was so surprised, laughing and cheering, got a few strange looks. He was drenched from nose to tail. He's a funny one, food motivated yes, but even more dog motivated!

  • Giza swam in the Atlantic once when we were out walkin' at low tide and the tile came in.
The Atlantic in Canada is pretty cold!

@lovely I haven't used them... but why you want one is really important in knowing which one to get. They really are very varied in what they do.

I welcome you also. Puppies are so adorable. Just remember a quiet Basenji is not necessarily a good thing. After all these years I still forget that one.

@mauigirl: Okay I actually went and found the e-mail I sent in to order the collar. The collars are from Northwind Catalog. Their medium collar is adjustable from 10" to 16" On the first collar I ordered I requested that it be 3" smaller than the medium size (Zip, girl), and the second I ordered I asked it to be 2" smaller (Riley, boy, bigger). In hindsight the medium as is would have been fine. On both of our dogs the collars are adjusted to just about as big as they can go so 13" on Zip and 14" on Riley (his is snugger going over his head but still loose around his neck). And the allowance looks to be 3" (that extra loop in a martingale that make it instantaneously adjustable) Sorry that took me so long, I ended up staying at work til 1am that night! Thank you very, very much !! It's past midnight now so I'll check it in the morning. Greetz UPDATE : Yes, they are the right size !:D

@maxamali: Long story short I am electing to go without surgery and treat with anti-inflammatory medicine as well as a joint supplement. For a joint supplement, I can highly recommend (from personal experience with our previous Basenji, Maxx), Missing Link Plus. It's expensive at places like Petco and PetsMart, but you can find it much cheaper by doing an Internet search.
