Hi everyone. I've gotten so much good info and advice just from reading other people's posts. So I finally decided to join. My Basenji Lucy is now five months old, I got her when she was ten weeks. She's so smart, and so much fun. She has actually been a really good puppy since we've got her. This is my first dog ever in my life, so i'm really glad i haven't had the headaches that a lot of puppies can cause. I do have one thing though that I can't figure out. Well, when I first got her I put a collar on her and she hated it. I left it on her thinking she would get used to it but for about two days straight she was constantly scratching at it and she wouldn't even walk normal in the house because she was so irritated. So I took it off of her. Now, just last week I decided to try again. The first time I used one of those basic adjustable ones, so this time i tried a leather one because i thought that might have been the problem. But it's the same thing, she's constantly trying to get it off. I again left it on her for about two days, and she acted very different almost like she was deppresed. She wouldn't eat hardly anything, she wasn't excited like she normally is, she didn't want to play, all she did was lay around in between going nuts for a minute trying to get the collar off. So again I gave in and took it off her and instantly she went back to her normal playful self. Any advice?

I don't put collars on my b's in the house. I only use them for walking.

My Luny doesn't like to have his collar on except when we go for walks. He'll scratch constantly at it otherwise. I would just leave off the collar (at least inside) except when necessary.

Are you sure that it's loose enough? I would think that lots of praise and maybe treating too would help. Put the collar on…give treat....
My two both wear martingales and they are pretty loose because they can be....if on lead they tighten up when the leash is taught.
You will have some trouble with taking walks if she shuts down with the collar on....
I don't think it's a good idea to take it off. What you're teaching her is that behaving like that when she has it on "works" because you take it off.Good luck!

May I ask why you want her to have a collar on when she is inside? Do you have a reason or just want her to wear it?
Most dogs don't like it, only with training the can get used to it.
Maybe, let the collar off a longer time and train her what you want, and when she's a bit older you can try again?Our B's hate is with a collar on inside the house, they shall do everyting to get it off, even till its hurt I think…

Instead of using a collar, try using a piece of elastic fashioned into a collar. Get the thinnest size you can find and make it so that it is close fitting on the neck… One of my boys was a collar freak... and hated wearing one, while I don't use collars in the house, he did need to get used to it.. especially for shows... he wore it 24/7.. and being elastic... it would come off easy if by chance he got it hung up on something.
Who did you get your pup from? I know a couple of breeders that have placed pups in Alaska

Magnum's never had a problem with a collar. He wears his ID/rabies collar (sorry, I don't trust ID chips, yet–and, yes, I've heard all the arguments--he is tattooed) and his IF collar from the time he gets up 'til the time he goes to bed (in case of escape or if we're gone and the unthinkable happens).
Have you tried incrementing collar wear slowly? Like, put it on her for a minute several times a day for a couple of days, then for five minutes, then ten, etc., etc.?

All mine wear one at all times in the house or not I just put it on them when they where little and after a couple days or fussing there used to it . Acaully now when i take it off to bath them ect. They go around the house looking for it till i put it back on lol we call it there "necklace" the kids usally like to kid around with them if it's off and say there running around the house "naked" lol
I like one on them because of there tags {they are micochipped} but i figure if they get out {knock on wood} and a person in the neigborhood has them they can't scan them like the animal control can and around here good luck getting them to come out if it's not between 9a and 5 pm So that way any person can see where they live and call me :) -
My dogs wear collars at all times in case they escape the house/yard. They are microchipped, but that's not fool proof {and the finders have to know to look}.
I use round leather collars with buckles. I just make sure the collars are loose – not quite loose enough to slip off. They don't seem to faze the dogs at all.
Of course, Bryan has collars on his pups from a young age, so maybe they're just used to them from the start. -

I don't collar anymore unless it's for "the walk" (or I have a house full of visiting college kids–you hope no one leaves the gate open, but you never know--collars go on the dogs this Friday:o )
My two B.'s now treat their collars as their favorite toy/food when they see them as they know it's walking time, and that's their most favorite time of any day:D

Okay I actually went and found the e-mail I sent in to order the collar. The collars are from Northwind Catalog. Their medium collar is adjustable from 10" to 16"
On the first collar I ordered I requested that it be 3" smaller than the medium size (Zip, girl), and the second I ordered I asked it to be 2" smaller (Riley, boy, bigger). In hindsight the medium as is would have been fine. On both of our dogs the collars are adjusted to just about as big as they can go so 13" on Zip and 14" on Riley (his is snugger going over his head but still loose around his neck). And the allowance looks to be 3" (that extra loop in a martingale that make it instantaneously adjustable)Sorry that took me so long, I ended up staying at work til 1am that night!
