A day at the beach in California

In California there are not very many beaches that allow dogs. We found a beach over at Half Moon Bay and took Chance and Kiya there. The weather was great. As we pulled there was a rather large sign at the entrance that said Dogs allowed as long as they are on a leash and controlled. As we walked down to the beach there were a bunch of people with their dogs but the majority of dogs were not on leashes!!! :confused: As we were walking, dogs ran up to us and Chance would go ballistic. Anytime a dog rushes towards him, he goes crazy. He has to be the one approaching the dog in order for it to be a pleasant experience.
I would have to scoop Kiya up every time a dog would run at her. She is only 4mts old and does not need to be introduced that way. One German Shepard came at us full force. The owner was no where to be found. I had to grab poor Kiya before she got mauled.
I am so upset with these people. Can anyone read!!!! Or do they feel that the laws do not comply with them. There are leash laws. It’s no longer fun to take your dog to the beach when you have to walk with a stick and scan the beach making sure no dog is going to rush up on you causing your Basenji to go ballistic. I almost want to hit the owners of the dogs for not complying with California Laws. Sheesh!!!!!
From now on, I am going to carry a piece of plastic PVC pipe when I walk my dogs. I don't like the idea of having to use it but if a dog is going to run at me and my dogs, I will use it to protect us. :mad: -
We often go to the Oregon beaches.
They allow dogs, and most folks have leashes with them, so they can keep the dogs controlled when other folks/dogs are around.
BUT it only takes a few to mess it up for everyone.
My 2 b's are not allowed off leash unless there is no other "critters" around.
Sorry your boy has had such a bad intro to other dogs. -

And it has always been used as an off leash dog park for years and years, regardless of the signs. I know in the past few years they tried to make it on leash, but no one does it… or was this a different beach?

I wish we had beaches around here that we could take Dallas to! Dogs are prohibited from all the Florida beaches [at least on the east coast] because of the dang sea turtles! Although we did take Dallas once to see how he'd do, kept him on leash though. Last weekend a family had their pitt off leash & it was running up to everyone & kicking sand on all the people tanning…ugh. Everyone was annoyed!

What people do not realize in the State of California, dog owners are 100% liable. If your dog is off leash and your dog attacks anyone, the owner can expect a serious lawsuit because they are in strict violation of California law. I see these types of cases daily and I hate to say it…but usually the owner of the dog that bit/attacked looses. -

Chance goes in to get "snipped" this Friday. I actually decided to take him to another place. The place where he originally was going to go wanted $500.00!!!!! Talk about expensive!

Well, as they say, you get what you pay for…. but that is a bit high even for around here. One thing I will say, please be sure to have a full blood panel done before, if you have not already.

Be sure that the lower price tag doesn't actually mean less care. When my vet gives the estimate it details all the costs and there are certain services that you can waive which will make the overall cost less but are highly recommended. Be sure that the lower price you have been quoted by a different vet office actually includes the same services, like pre-op bloodwork and an IV line. Also make sure extras that you don't need are not in the estimate, my vet always has microchip on their estimates for spay/neuter and always have to take it off for mine since they are chipped at 10 weeks.

And I will add that today, Mickii cost me 400+ for one day at the Vet… she has (we hope) Geriatric Vestibular that started Saturday night/Sunday morning when she fell out of the bed and was very unstable on her feet.. walking like a drunk sailor.. that has progressed to rapid eye movement and head tilt to the left... much motion sickness and not uncommon to elder dogs. After a full panel of blood work, one day on IV fluids, and other med... it was a grand total of over 400.00... but she had the best of care... and I have complete confidence in my Vets.. she is home now and resting (which is a good thing) as with Vestibular sometimes they are so worked up that they can't rest... With luck (since her blood work came back as the liver and kidney pretty normal for a girl her age 15+) she will slowly recover... So in the end... we do what we can... but support during and after any surgery is a big deal IMO....

I don't like the idea of having to use it but if a dog is going to run at me and my dogs, I will use it to protect us. :mad:I think I know that beach (from I-280, exit H-92 towards Half Moon Bay, and at the end of the road (H-92), turn left (on H-1), and the beach is about 1/4 mile away)… Yup, took my old B over there and there are ALWAYS off-leashed dogs in there... Instead of bringing PVC pipe, you may want to just skip that place and go to Pillar Point... You can walk your B's (it's paved and it's on a high-traffic area so the dogs are usually on leash), then have lunch at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company - it's pet friendly and is quite relaxing... Or, you can also have lunch at the Half Moon Bay airport... They have about 4 camp tables outside and you can watch the small airplanes take-off and land, within a few feet from your table... :)

Yup..that was the beach we went to. You've been there too…man what a pain! I swear.
We actually were at Pillar Point first to get lunch and then decided to take our B's to that beach...Yah...never again!
