How To Find A Breeder

  • Question For Those Who May Know. I Live In The Eastern Part Of Iowa And I Am Trying To Find A Breeder Near Here. If Anyone Knows Of One Or Where I Could Find Out Please Let Me Know.

    Thanks,
    Gus

  • Please go to www.basenji.org and then to breeder listings.. but first go to www.basenji.org/learn and to the section that says how to find a responsible breeder.

On the BOCA website the link is "is a basenji right for me" and while you might not find one close to you, you can find responsible breeders to talk to…

  • If there is more than one breeder in your area, I'd also recommend calling a few of them and doing home visits to find the right one for you – even if you have to drive a bit.

When we got our first Basenji I had found a breeder who lived about ten minutes from me. She was a member of the local breed club, so I thought it'd be a sure thing. We did a home visit and that just about turned my dh off completely from the whole idea. Fortunately, I had contacted the president of the area Basenji club and she recommended a couple others --both of which were an hour drive from here --whom we did visit and could easily have gotten our puppy from either one.

Shop around as much as possible to fing the right breeder for you.

  • The Show Me Basenji Club has members in Iowa. Their website is http://www.showmebasenjiclub.com/directory.html

  • thank you to all that have answered my question I really appreciate it. I am now just waiting to here back from a breeder that has a set of puppies but wants them to be shown and will know more in March.

  • I have to say there are some folks in the midwest who 'sound' like they are ok but are not - if you want to email me off list happy to provide references for lots of reputable b folks.

I agree with Lisa… while your list can be helpful, puppymillers have learned to look very reputable making it much harder to look at the website to determine. The bottom line is, no matter if they sell one breed or more, they can be a puppymill. And there are certainly some very legit responsible breeders with 2 or even 4 breeds! My entry into dog breeding/showing was a woman who had English bulldogs, her daughter had aghans and setters. If they don't have pedigrees and health testing info on the web page, I'd run. If they have it and you check OFA and find they falsified, or only maybe the current or some of their dogs have testing.. run. The rest they can fake or pretend but generations of health clearances generally aren't part of a puppymill.

@TwinPeaks: Hello Brianne, There are no breeders closer to Edmonton than Shamaron Basenjis. I would like you to know that over 14 years I have had 3 basenjis from Shamaron basenjis. All the dogs turned out to have fabulous temperments and lovely confirmation. With just a bit of research, the sire of the litter they have on their website shows that the sire or dam is not tested and comes from a Fanconi line on the bottom side through Changa Gala Celebration, with not only Fanconi but PRA eye problems in his offspring. Now, I can't say anything about the Dam of the litter, as I don't find the pedigree on Sally's pedigree site, but this kennel has produced a Fanconi Affected in Shamaron's Kofi Utundu and they have breed to lines with much known Fanconi.

@Benkura: I have just sent off for the Fanconi testing kit for 2 of my dogs. They've not arrived yet but when I get the results they will be added to the site. The other 2 dogs will be tested when I can afford it. The website is in a very infant state - I'm learning as I go along. I plan to add pages about my dogs with pics and a guestbook etc. Keep checking for new items. :) That's great…. always good to have the Fanconi test done, especially if the sire and dam were not.... good luck on your results. And you site looks really nice so far.

Pat, I've also been guiding them here and asking them to become members so they can learn a little more about Basenji's than they already know. Many people thinking of this breed think they are barkless, odorless, and are trainable! After reading a few threads they either come back and say no way, or show me where to go from here.
