Looking For Winter Coat

Basenji Talk

  • We will be taking Chance to the snow this x-mas and I was wondering what type of sweater/coat would keep him warm.
    Thanks!

  • I got a really nice fleece coat for my B from http://www.fidofleece.com.

The Z-Pack: Zen, Zoe, and Ziggy

  • Tiggy has two from fido fleece, but I got them from sitstay.com cheaper shipping and coats are cheaper

  • EL D won't sit still for any of the sweaters or the kind with sleeves - worse if he finds them hanging within reach he'll rip them up. I found a fleece type with velcro closures at the local pet shop that he tolerates and one from Lands End that's also rain repellent and has reflectives on it for less than $30.

  • I bought Tucker the K9 Overcoat II from Ruffwear (ruffwear.com). I actually bought it from sitstay.com since it was a few bucks cheaper and the shipping was free. The XS is too small (Tuck is 25lbs) and the S is slightly long and runs out over his tail. I'm going to get the length shortened at the tailor shop. Then it will fit perfectly.

The ruffwear Cloud Chaser is sweet, but the sizes don't work with my B. XS is WAY too small (won't even zip) and the S is WAY too big (long, the zipper goes past his butt, so alteration would be hard unless you were to also have a new zipper put on that is shorter).

  • Honestly…keeping them warm...is actually a challenge! My two Bs will tremble in the cold no matter how many coats, sweaters, AND boots  I put on them so I think in the end it just makes me feel better that they're covered. But I don't think they're actualy warm..lol :D

What about a full body snow suit. Could dress then up like the little kid from the movie "A Chrstmas Story" LOL j/k

  • That would be funny. When Tucker first donned his Overcoat, he acted like that kid did. He walked all still legged and hesitated at stairs/curbs. Thought he was going to topple over if he misstepped. Hee hee! He must have been Italian…F-R-A-G-I-L-E...Fragilay!

  • HAAAAA HAAAAA…..Did Tucker also screech.."I can't get up! I can't get up!!" LOL LOL!!! :D :D :D

WBL-ROFL!!! I guess that might work...and a "FA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA RA" to you too!! :D :D

  • Actually, he was screeching "sassa frazzing razzer fumkler booblit gramble boocher FUUUUUUUUUDGE!"

    Hee hee!

As long as you don't do this to them, this is one miserable dog

More expensive, I'm waiting for Tiggy to be done growing to buy one, but I really like the look of these

Seems like we'd all have a little 'weirdo' in us based on our 'breed of choice'!

And it could be worse…poor dog could be wearing something like these:

  • I was at Big Lots yesterday, and they had Fido Fleece coats for $7. They were the kind with the velcro across the back. The size tag recommended sizes 12 or 14 for basenjis, but I had to get a size 16 for it to be long enough.

  • Actually what the FidoFleece site does not show is that the velcro openings are along the top of the back. You lay the coat open on the floor and just have to set your B down setting feet in front openings and whoosh - pull up the sides and the coat is on.

If there is a fido fleece dealer near you or at the show - check out thier sale rack - last years colors great price - I don't think I've paid more than $15.00 for any of them - including a cute little windbreaker that was fleece on one side and water repellant on the other (with a hood)

  • PS I don't do the 4 legged coats - way to complicated!!!!!!

  • I don't know if anyone has a Pet Supply Outlet by them, but we have one in Sheboygan, and it had great winter coats. I didn't want to spend much, and I got this one for $20. It is a nice winter coat, and it doesn't have the holes for the paws, instead there are just two velcro strips that go around her middle and chest. The brand is Fashion Pet, I don't know if you can get them elsewhere or not. They aren't anything special, but its a reasonable, simple, yet warm coat that my dog actually doesn't mind wearing.
I tried a different one earlier that had paw holes, and it was a struggle to get it on her, plus once I did she refused to move :) She looked so sad wearing it that I had to take it back and try something else!

  • Here is a link to the coat I mentioned above. The medium fit perfectly for Tosca, although I guess being a little heavy at 20 lbs the vet said she is a little petite.

  • Duh forgot the link…can you tell its getting late?

Its long so you might have to copy/paste rather than click.

  • I have found with my B that most coats that I have bought do not fit her very good. I have found one at www.ruffwear.com, that I am going to order this week. It has gotten really cold here in NC and my B, Sahara, is freezing when I take her outside. She just shakes, and shakes when she goes potty, I feel so sorry for her. The coat I have is nicely lined with fleece but it is not long enough for her long body and sticks up in the back, the cold wind goes right up her back. The K-9 coat at ruffwear is sized by length of dog and girth, so it should fit better. It is expensive but it will probably be the last coat I get her, she is 2 and I don't expect her to grow any more and I want to keep her at 23-25 pds to be healthy. Besides if I keep buying these cheap ones that don't fit good I have wasted my money.

@elbrant The first time I took Ibis lure coursing: I let go, and she ran straight to the lunch stand! It was in the opposite direction of the field. I don't think she could figure out why a dog would run after an empty bag, when everyone knows, they're much more interesting when heavy!

I forgot to mention that they can also be extreme houdinis. My female has learned how to manipulate the latch on her crate so I have to use a lock and she taught herself how to open the screen door. My friend had a male that could climb an 8 foot fence and escape. Be sure to check about such things when you talk with breeders or BRAT.

@jdido09: I am looking into getting a Basenji and am really excited. I am a college student and am interested in getting a dog to train as a service dog (Canine Good Citizen). I want to get my dog involved in the Pet friend program at the local Children's Hospital, I know more people with therapy dogs of all breeds that came from rescue than from breeder… maybe because many of the people I know doing therapy are also involved in rescue, but please consider that a GOOD rescue keeps a dog a couple of months before placing. A GOOD rescue can help you evaluate and find a dog with the temperament. That said, sorry... I don't think a dog, particularly a Basenji, is probably a good choice for you right now. Why rush? Finish college, find out for SURE if you are maybe going to grad school or maybe ending up with some super job that demands many hours work or travel. I know you are excited... but think of being fair to the dog. How about fostering basenjis for a while. A win/win. You get to truly know the breed AND it gives you time to finish school and determine what your "grownup" life style is going to be. Rescues are full of dogs from people who were young and in college and THOUGHT they knew because it is hard to imagine the changes coming your way soon.

I think it is a built in survival trait; however, I would like to take it one step further & say that they LEARN over time that this look keeps them out of trouble. Mine have perfected "the look" and use it on unsuspecting guests for attention. Callie, in particular, has the most woebegone expression, and she uses it on those she can tell are suckers. A friend recently stayed with me for the weekend. All weekend, she was saying "Oh poor Callie! Look at her face." I kept insisting to her that Callie was playing her for a sucker, and she was feeding into it. She was convinced Callie was sad or upset. While we were watching a movie, Callie fell asleep on top of my friend on the couch. Movie over, I headed off to bed & she said she was also going to be going to bed soon. The next morning I found my friend on the couch with BOTH basenjis on top of her. Once Callie settled in, she felt like it would be mean to wake her up, so she slept on the couch all night so as not to disturb Callie. I think it is instinctual/survival, but I think they learn to work it to their advantage for sure!

My dog has a few coat and has boots that she wears in the snow. She has a fleece hoodie and a jean jacket. I now have an IG doggie how hates the cold so I looked on the greyhound sites and found a coat that is made for basenji's and IG's. I forget the site off hand but I will look it up for you and get back to you. It is fleece and has a snooze(neck/head warmer). Great coat and easy to put on.
