Whoa!!! Slow down!! NO ONE said that rescuing and caring for animals is irresponsible. The discussion was NOT about abandoning or not caring for an animal.
The discussion was about intentionally breeding a dog about whose health history you know nothing, and It can hurt a lot.
I'm sure the breeders on the forum will explain better – I am not a breeder, just an owner of amazing, beautiful, healthy dogs also.
There are genetic illnesses that can be carried from one generation to the next - Fanconi is just one very serious disease that Basenjis, in particular, are prone to. Without knowing the genetic background of your bitch, you could be helping to continue passing bad genes down to future generations, not to mention handing the new owners of your puppies dogs with medical problems that you just didn't know about.
Please look around the forum for posts on responsible breeding practices, necessary tests, etc. to be sure you have an animal that is genetically healthy enough for breeding.
