What does your B do all day?

Behavioral Issues
  • Deke sleeps most of the day and I'm home with him. He's very laid back. If he's not sleeping he likes to just look out the window laying on the back of the couch. If it's nice out he lays outside on a small picnic table sunning himself. He's most active in the evening when the whole family is home.

  • Cory sleeps until I get up and then follows me around the house, napping in whatever room I'm in. She also has periodic episodes of playing or getting into mischief. She usually does the B500 a couple of times around the backyard in the late afternoon.

  • Hollie goes to work with me. I am fortunate to have an entire wall that is all glass and Hollie spends most of her day standing guard, watching for the squirrels to come to the bird feeders.

When not squirrel watching/hunting, she divides her day between playing with her bestest buddy Beau (a 65 lb standard poodle) and Thelma (lab/pit mix) and getting people attention from all my co-workers.

She LOVES having a job!! :p

  • Let's see…Senji wakes up around 9 or 10 o'clock. If I'm working, my dad takes him out for a walk. Then he gets his pills, which are "hidden" in some ground up meat. He usually doesn't like to eat anything else until lunch time. Then he gets walked again. He spends most of the afternoon napping, until he sees the mailman. Then he does the B-500 for a few minutes. He also gets walked around dinner time and again, around 8 or 9pm. Otherwise, he mostly lays around and expects to get his belly rubbed or lays on top of the sofa and watches the birds outside.

  • They all watch Animal Planet and Lassie reruns.:D Willy likes Scooby do.:D

  • Sol spent most of the summer in my very securely fenced yard, but now that it is colder he comes to work with me. I work in a rock-climbing gym, and Sol is crated when we are busy, but I take him out for walks, and he is loose in the gym when there are no customers– we have two entrance doors, so he is safe. He also comes out to meet people-- the regulars and kids who don't know b's-- he is an ambassador for the breed.

He is amazingly mellow with people-- the most mellow b I've ever seen with kids. Of course I always supervise, but he's so gentle and good I'm thinking of training him as a therapy dog. Compliments to the good breeding program and socializing at Eldorado Basenji's, where he spent his first 5 1/2 years!

  • She-Ra sleeps most of the day until the wife gets home and plays with her some. She has the cats to keep her amused as well (although they don't see it that way I'm sure) :)

According to my wife She-Ra waits by the baby gate around the time I usually get home whining and wondering when "that man" is coming home. Once the garage door finally opens I usually get a solid baroo and some kisses, so coming home's pretty much always a good thing.

  • Taariq usually sleeps or takes a nap on the couch until I take him out for a walk to the dog park around 9 where he meets his pals. When we get home, he gets breakfast (he has recently developed a habit of not eating before our walk).

After that, until 3, he enjoys curling up on the couch for a nap, playing with his toys (pulling the stuffing out of cuddly - baby-safe - toys is a favourite), chewing on rawhide bones, and checking on me. Then he's coming to tell me it's time for another walk to the dog park in order to meet his other pack of friends. We stay there an hour, sometimes longer.

When my partner comes home, and we prepare dinner, he plays happily with his toys or watches us in the kitchen, hoping we'd drop some food. =) After his dinner at around 7, he likes to chew on some bone or greenie toothbrush, and has a final burst of energy after his late walk around 10. That's the time we teach him new tricks. And that's pretty much it. =)

I am fortunate to work for friends who just happen to run their company from a home office. The biggest benefit… taking Hollie to work with me!! :D

  • Bailey and Zoe sleep until noon when it's cold out. If it's nice out they play togather really hard and look for trouble, hey are partners in crime.

  • Just before I leave for work, EL D goes crazy until he gets his kong toy with treats then he just sleeps until I get home. Then a walk and then he search the yard for squirrels and rabbits, unless he's hungry – he'll prance around the house carrying his food dish or sometimes throwing it. Sometimes he'll watch TV in the evenings or just tear up his toys. Every now and then he'll do the Basenji500 - though mostly it's when he needs to go potty.

Cory and Jayden loathe wet grass….especially Jayden. Cory will at least get off the patio long enough to pee. Jayden uses the patio. And he thinks the flower bed next to the patio with its nice dry pine straw is his personal potty! That is where I have to do most of my pooper-scooping. Pat

The other kind of guarding - for things that he gets by accident - that still continues, but less and less, although I don't trust him fully. He has been trained to go in his crate very willingly because he always gets a treat when he does. If he has something I don't want him to have I tell him to "get in your crate!" which almost always works the first time. He gets his treat, I close the crate, and then I clean up the mess without any worry. For our dog, if it's something like a cookie or pizza, nothing will stop him from devoring it.

Animals definitely know. The one day that I've been sick since Ruby arrived, she curled up with me on the couch for most of the day…wasn't her usual rambunctious self. I once was taking care of my friend's black lab for a weekend and was sick one of the days. I was on the couch and the dog just came over and put his head on me like he was saying "sorry you don't feel well...don't worry about running around with me, I'll stay with you"...it was the sweetest thing, and we basically just hung out in front of the fire for the day.
