Muscle Cramp

She-Ra's not a happy Basenji right now…
If you saw the Fireworks thread, you know she got a little frightened at the puppy park when some went off and started RUNNING. Well, looks like she might have "over-run" because now she's pulled a muscle and is favoring one of her front legs over the other.
She hopped off our bed the day after and kind of crumpled to the ground and started whining (enough to bring a tear to a glass eye!), then held her paw up to Mom (and me) to get it better. Then she was off and walking again, but with a slight limp. Thinking it might be a problem with her pads, we looked them over but couldn't see anything. So off to the vet we went. Nothing was broken (we'd figured that since she was walking around fine), and her pads looked great, so she (our vet) started pulling on her legs and noted she was more resistant on one of them. So it looks like a muscle sprain that she's pretty much going to have to work out.
Which I think she has, for the most part, only we have a new problem now...she jumps up on the bed and couch no problem, but she's petrified to jump off of them! She'll whimper and run around frantically until someone picks her up and puts her down...I've been gently nudging her off the bed and helping her land, but we're really trying to avoid just picking her up outright for fear this will develop into a habit. Are we doing the right thing or is there another way to deal with this you guys might know of?

Maybe it is a little sore now and hurts a bit if she jumps and hits that spot with the full weight of her body. I'm no expert but I think for at least now what you are doing is a nice compromise. You are encouraging her to jump but you are taking some of the stress off that area.

Whenever any of my dogs have had any problems with their legs (from soft tissue injury to ACL surgery), the vet has told me to keep them from jumping up on anything until they heal.

That is correct… and if you are going to let up up on the bed/couch etc.. (and I know that it would be near to impossible to stop)... I would lift her down until it gets better....

There are always the pet steps. I've seen them on TV before and in several pet stores. You can even fashion something up at home to give She-Ra an easy way down. Good luck, and I hope she's feeling better soon!

i don't know if you want to, but when Medjai hurt his leg, the vet gave him rimady (i think) and he is now just fine. It helped him heal a lot faster.
