Where does your B sleep?

Basenji Talk
  • When I first got EL D (retired show dog) he had problems with the crate and refused to enter it so he slept in the kitchen in an old dog bed until I could trust him to be loose in the house. The first night I brought him into my bedroom I intended for him to sleep in the dog bed on the floor next to the bed. I never got the chance :) As soon as I entered the room with EL D, he walked around the bed with me and hopped up on top and that's where he stayed. He has his own side of the bed, and sleeps under the covers (he'll paw at me to let him under if I'm in bed first) with his butt against some part of my body. Often he'll start at the top of the bed and eventually rolls down towards the bottom of the bed, always on "his" side. One night he rolled too far and fell off :D

  • Savannah eithers curls up against me (rear end facing me of course) or between my legs if i make the mistake of sleeping on my back.

  • Kane used to sleep on my bed, and often took up so much space I couldn't sleep comfortably. He'd always growl if you tried to move him, it was so cute. When he was a puppy I think he slept in his kennel, but I guess he didn't like that.

  • I guess I'd better not let Alex see this thread; he sleeps outside in his dog house on the patio. Unless it's cold outside, then he sleeps in his dog bed inside the house.

  • Haha, I guess the rest of us spoil our Bs. I say well done for not giving in!

Don't feel bad. Mine both sleep in their crates in another room.

  • I could never trust my Bs outside alone for too long…afraid they may have too much time to figure out an escape route :D :D

My two sleep wherever they want but their fav spot is on THEIR couch :) and at night they must got to bed in their crates :( C3PO hates that because he'd rather sleep on our bed but Topaz doesn't mind...she's sleep anywhere as long as she can SLEEP...what a lazy dog!

  • Our princess Trixie sleeps in our bed under the covers. She switches between right by my husband and right by me but she has been in out bed since the night we brought her home. I know big mistake but I would'nt change it for the world!!

  • My husband and I love it that Sahara sleeps in our bed. She is our baby girl, and keeps us warm. :D

  • When I first acquired EL D he couldn't handle the crate so I left him sleeping in the kitchen in a doggie bed. The first time I let him have full run of the house and was going to bring his doggie bed in the bedroom. Yeah right - as soon as he walked in the bedroom he was up on the bed - and has never left :p:

  • kip sleeps in his basket at the bottom of ny bed but if it is cold he snuggles up to me in my bed

  • Jamie sleeps in her crate mostly, shes 6 so she has gotten quite used to it. On special occasions my wife and I let bboth dogs in the bed. In that case, she sleeps either between us or in the bend of my legs until she gets hot then she will work her way to be lying against my side, feet straight up in the air, snoring, and making my wife and I laugh until it hurts!!

  • I caught EL D snoring a couple of times - at first I thought there was something wrong with him - first time I ever heard a dog snore!

We once had a basset hound that snored so loudly that we wouldn't let her sleep in our bedroom.

  • Myran sleeps under the duvet with his head on my tummy and little sister Efia age 10 weeks sleeps in her crate by bed but when she´s housebroken she´s more then welcome to share the bed.During day time they sleep in various dogbed´s but are crated when I leave the house.

  • Myran sleeps under my duvet with his head on my tummy and little sister Efia 10 weeks sleeps in her crate by my bed. When she´s totally housebroken she´ll be welcomed to join us;)

  • Goober sleeps by my feet. I don't know how he stands the smell. It also gets annoying when my wife and the other dogs pile on the bed and the restless leg syndrome is acting up.

  • My girls has always been able to sleep with me since I got her. She has 2 dog beds in the bedroom and there is also a couch in there as well. Sometimes she start out on the couch or one of the dog beds but almost always ends up in the bed under the covers by morning. Sometimes at bed time she is a bit frisky even with an evening walk, I will give her a chewy treat which she will work on until she get tired and goes to bed. Now she is 11 yrs, there are not too many times she isn't ready for bed when I am these days, but she will look for something to get into when she isn't ready for bed if I don't give her something to get her busy.

  • All three pups sleep in bed with us. We bought two double beds and stuck them togeather so we could all fit. It's still crowded.

My next dog IS going to sleep in a crate!

The coat looks gorgeous - it's just the skin…I have noticed since it is persisting it down here (and cold - well it is Summer...) that the flaking is much better - I wonder if the flat is too dry for him? It has got central heating...which is till occasionally switched on - and it's nearly June :(

I was interested to see this post. I have currently 2 B. gals, Tootsie and Peanut. Tootsie by day is a yodeling lunatic, but sleeps like a rock. Peanut, on the other hand is mostly silent, except for an occasional growl when needed, and has been that way for the 4 years we've had her. About 3 or 4 times in the past year, though, we will wake up to the most mournful, creepy howl I've ever heard.. Pea 'sleep howling' I guess you'd call it! It truly sounds a bit "other worldly" and it always makes me hope she isn't having a really bad doggie dream!

Definitely looks like a basenji to me. If it was something like a lab, they would be in the pool hogging the space.

A coupple of issues in this thread! (Way to multi-task here people!) Treats: the whole "upset tummy" is definately a too much of a good thing issue. Whatever you decide to treat with, make them very small and just watch how much you give. My dogs go nuts for bologna or plain ham. Cheese is the perenial favorite, but never underestimate the power of a "Good Boy!!" Coats & "Cold" Weather: My boys have it rough. Living in the Midwest, it is not uncomming to spend all witner in the single digits (not counting windchill which often kicks us into the negative teens, if not worse). Both boys have dog coats made by Lands End in the same style (and cold weather specifications) as their Squall jacket series. It consists of an easy belly band and front chest closure meathod. No worries about tails or legs. Easy on, easy off. And my boys live in them during the winter. Dogs, just like people, quickly acclimate to the weather. If we deicde it's "Cold" at 50 degrees, they start to feel that way. If we decide 50 is downright balmy, the dogs learn that too. Walking: Oh, the perenial issue of B's! I agree with many of the posters here: it's all in the tone and your attitude. If you decide to be upbeat and positive and decisive, the B will follow! (But probably will quit at mile 6 if he hasn't had his ice cream yet… grin)
