Ng in Africa

Basenji Talk
  • I was watching National Geographic Channel over the weekend and there was a documentary on the Hamar people of Kenya. There were Basenjis of course, as well as some larger dogs that I think were pharoh hounds. But one guy was sitting in the middle of a very serious meeting of elders- playing with a lab puppy.

  • There are Basenjis in the movie Out of Africa with Robert Redrford and Meryl Strepp or so I have been told. I haven't seen it for a while.

  • We watched The African Queen {Bogart and Hepburn} for the umpteenth time
last weekend, and I noticed for the first time a Basenji on a man's lap during the opening church service scene.
I've watched that movie my whole life, and have never noticed the dog in the church before.

  • I had read in the "Dog World" magazine from a couple years back about the B in The African Queen and rented it right away lol. Now I have to go rent Out Of Africa!
BTW if anyone happens to see another Basenji on the cover of a dog mag. could you post~Thanks

  • I loved the movie Out of Africa!!! Now I gotta watch it again :D

  • An episode of The Wild Thornberries (a Nick cartoon) featured a Basenji episode about a tribe with Basenji's.

Also an episode of the Nick series RocketPower had an episode where they start a pet sitting service with one of the dogs being a basenji.

  • I was going to mention those, but thought it would be silly! I love both of those cartoons…I miss them!

  • When you have two kids, Nickalodeon is about the only "appropriate" channel to watch.

The September 2006 issue of "Dogs in Canada" has an article about Helix's breeder and the dogs she donates to PADS. Alas, it did not have a picture of Helix but was of her other school drop out B, Tanner. One of the "Dog World" issues about 1-2yrs ago had a B on the cover.

There is a quick scene of a B puppy in the movie " The Constant Gardener". A cute little red/white. There is another movie I read about in I think "Dog World" as well, called I believe "My Fair Lady" (a 1940/50's movie). Something really interesting as well, last fall during the season finale of "Heros" a McDonald's commercial came on and I believe a Basenji appeared in it. I have never seen this commercial since so I can not confirm this.

I think I will have to go rent "Out of Africa" and "African Queen" so I can look for the Bs as well!:)

    Thanks,
    Rhonda- Helix and Tang's mom:)

  • We have a TiVo wishlist set up for Basenji and once it recorded an Episode of I Dream of Jeanie. We checked and the show description was about them going to Jeanie's home, the Island of Basenji, but there were no Basenjis in the episode. :( I wonder if maybe one of the writers had one or something.

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

Very nice! I love seeing these kinds of photos! This past weekend I was running with a friend, and we happened to be running right where they were holding a race. The race was called the Race for Congo Women or something, and I was joking that they needed a bunch of basenjis there.
