    @tuckerbesosa I’m on the East coast, but felt I needed to chime in here. The reason for the DNA testing is important to eventually stop the diseases from showing up in the line. It is VERY expensive to follow the protocols for a basenji afflicted with fanconi, which usually does not show up till later in life, but not always. Reputable breeders are in the business of making better basenjis, healthy basenjis. They care for their dogs till the day they pass away. They want to make sure their puppy/dog goes to a forever home, but will take their dog back for ANY reason it should fail in your home. This may not seem like a big deal, but it really is. Many breeders will offer, on occasion, adult dogs for a variety of reasons. A reputable breeder will do extensive interviews with a potential family. This is to get to know you, what you are looking for in a puppy, to ‘match’ you with the best basenji for your family. Our breeder had us fill out a questionnaire, e-mail, a telephone call, meet the breeder, before we ever saw a dog! We were looking for an older dog, they gave us several options, telling us which one they felt would fit best into our home. It’s an important relationship you have with your breeder. They will be there for questions, issues that may arise, offer advise, some will offer boarding (for a small fee) for their dogs, and most important, take back should the pup fail in your home for any reason. Buyer beware, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. If they are offering the dog at a low price, there is a reason, and NOT a good one. It means they are cutting corners. It’s an investment for 14-16 years (usually). You want those to be good healthy, quality years. If you are looking for a dog now, consider an adult dog. Most reputable breeders have waiting lists.

    Except that's probably the biggest myth out there about a responsibly breed dog--that you're paying for a fancy pedigree and show potential that you don't need. Breeders who participate in show typically keep just one or two puppies for show. The rest go straight to pet homes.

    What you're actually paying for is thorough health-testing of the mom and dad: Fanconi syndrome, PRA, hips / elbows, thryoid, and eyes. You're paying for extensive socialization that can last anywhere from 8-12 weeks so that your puppy comes home with the best temperament possible and acclimated to things like nail trims, teeth-brushing, and being handled by the vet. You're paying for routine puppy vet care. Also, you are paying for a support system that lasts the entire life of your puppy, which is 13-17 years on average. If you have questions about training, breed traits, spaying / neutering, etc., your breeder is going to be there to answer them so you're not left guessing. Your breeder will also take that dog back at any point during its life if there's ever any reason you have to rehome it. When our first basenji died in 2015 at age 17 -- her breeder was the first one I emailed about her death, and her words were such a comfort.

    Also, even if you can find a basenji for sale in the $900 range, by the time you pay for air shipping ($400-$500), you're back up to $1500 AND you're getting minimal or no health-testing, minimal or no socialization, minimal to no lifetime support, and so on.

    So, stick with the sure thing and wait for a responsibly bred basenji puppy to come available to you. "

    Check them out how? Unless they have generations of heart, hips, thyroid, clear fanconi etc...they are NOT good breeders.

    As for cost, you get a puppy with a pedigree containing no or limited genetic and health testing and your chances of paying far more for health issues are much greater. Also, sometimes breeders have older pups that didn't work out for showing they'll sell for less, or young adults ..nor btw do most litters have only show quality puppies.

    Good breeders breed for health, not just showing. In fact health is the most important.

    *If you belong to Facebook please join the group "Basenji Puppies/Puppys/Puppy’s: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY". You will learn from the group posts and information why the two breeders mentioned above are not considered "reputable" as well as a whole raft of other breeders considered "disreputable". You will also learn what constitutes a reputable breeder. A non-refundable deposit is a red flag, not being able to locate sire and dame test results on OFA is another, contracts where the breeder does not accept full responsibility of their pups or dogs if something goes wrong or you can no longer take care of him/her. Reputable does not mean they have to be a show breeder but usually they are. Not all puppies are meant for the show ring but their breeder should be breeding to the standard as if they were.

    @tanza thank you. Have been recieving email, texts, phone calls from a supposed breeder in southern CA that had red flags once he asked for down pymnt even though I kept asking about the pup. It's a new site called, Debora Basenji Puppy Home. So frustrated. Lost my girl a year ago. She was my SD.

    @kdpnut - The clue is that this site was just put up in 2022... This in my opinion is a scam. Unless they give you the names of the sire/dam of these pups... and you can verify their health testing... DON'T DO IT! Here is a link for finding a responsible breeder.     While there are people that say that the prices of a well bred pup is "over priced" is NOT true, responsible breeders breed to improve the breed and many, many responsible breeders do NOT charge more for show or pet... In the end with responsible breeders the home is the most important. If they want a show puppy, they keep it...period. Their prices are a scam for sure... and I am guessing if you asked for proof of DNA testing for Fanconi/PRA you will get NO response...

    @sakuhn62 - Have to respond that I breed well bred, healthy Basenji puppies. Prices are NO different for pet or show... in fact it is not that often that I have placed puppies in show homes... if I want to show, I keep that puppy. For a well bred puppy it MAKES no difference if show quality or not... price is the same. You are paying for a life time commitment and you are now part of the breeders family. The contract says if you have to give up that pup... the breeder takes that pup, no questions asked... real breeders care for the puppies that they raise and place. The price is only the beginning... care from the pup is life time.. to get a pup that is NOT health tested and not of good temperament is a life time of lots of money spent... more than the normal care that is needed. Don't fool yourself..

    Definitely research a legitimate responsible breeder. It will save you a lot of heartache and unnecessary expenses. Prices for a purebred may seem high from a responsible breeder but many times they are just breaking even after health testing, veterinarian visits, medication, licenses, food, etc. Breeders just want their pups to be placed into loving responsible homes!

    @jengosmonkey LOL.... that is what is happening... and people fall for it... don't do it... too many scam sites... and the pups you are seeing are pup's pictures that are stolen from other sites... these are not real... the posts that I have made and insisted that I would not be interested unless they supplied sire/dam names and the conversation has gone "dark"... and they have not and I am sure will not supply the information I have requested... DO NOT send money, do NOT believe their information.. these are scams... period

    Just wanted to give an update on my experience and hope that it helps others in the future. So I did get the puppy and have had her now for about 6-7 weeks. She is doing AWESOME! Shes completely healthy, and at 14-15 weeks, is incredibly obedient. For instance, I take her to the dog park, and she recalls every time I say "Nani come." There are also some agility obstacles in the park which I'm starting to train her on and she does really well with simple things like walking up, down, sitting, staying, gonig through the tunnels, etc… When I give her her food, I make her sit, stay, and give me a fist bump before she can eat, and I'll switch the order up every time. I then say "now you can have it" and then she eats. Its to the point now, where she is in the kitchen, and I'll go to my room, come back in 2-3min, and she is still sitting by the food and hasn't even touched it yet until I give the command. She is doing fantastic! Fantastic with other dogs, fantastic with kids, adults, everything. She doesn't have a tendency anymore either now to chew on things she's not supposed to and when she does get the urge, she looks for her toys. Not sure if this is just because the breed itself is very intelligent, or the breeder, or a mix of both but I couldn't have asked for a better puppy, especially the way she is now at the age of 14-15 weeks. My allergies also do very well around her whcih is HUGE! Not sure if I just got lucky or what, but she is great a puppy for how obedient she is already, her compassion, and her behavior. Just simply amazing :-)

    Gale Thompson, Undercover Basanjis, is not my breeder but she shows incredible dedication. One time I contacted her about a BRAT rescue that her dog was 3 generations back. She didn't own parents or grandparents, but she offered to foster, find a foster and PAY for the spay/neuter and donate in the interest of that dog. Recently we had a family needing to place their dogs– one came from Gale's line. She spent a lot of time helping find the "out of the country" breeder and a co-breeder to help get the dogs back to them and again offered money and help for dogs simply in her line.

    Jenny and Helena, thanks for your replies. It's always interesting talking to basenji people. The lady didn't mention the name of the bitch. She did say that Little Brown Jug went to live with someone on the Isle of White. She also said that she's never heard a Basenji yodel, unfortunately Kwame wouldn't perform for her.

    @Maya: When i was first in touch with Maya's breeder i asked lots of questions about health testing. I knew the temperment of Maya's mum (which is fantastic!!) as i had met her several times, so i asked all about Dad. Having witnessed some horrific temperments around the ring over here, health and temperment were a priority for me… I also would have been concerned if the breeder hadn't asked LOTS of questions of me. She wanted to know if i'd researched the breed, if i knew they weren't necessarily easy to live with (and explained!) and just lots of questions about me to make sure she knew if i would be a responsible basenji owner. I think with such a unique breed you need a responsible breeder who is looking for a permenant home who has done their research :) This was totally my experience as well. I was very aware that it wasn't just us interviewing a breeder, but the breeder getting to know us. I was really grateful to see that our amazing breeder took the time to make sure that we knew what we were getting into. It would make me exceptionally leery if a breeder handed over a Basenji, no questions asked.

    @etzbseder: Luckily, at my parents house, their dog has put smudges all over that door, and Medjai just scratches at it when he wants in. (I know I shouldn't reward it, but he wants in). I had Medjai yelp once when jumping off the bed, which is strange because he likes to sit on my shoulders and has jumped off there to chase animals without a problem. Keoki scratches when he wants in – started when we taught him to ring bells that were hanging, but the bells have disappeared "literally", so now he just scratches. Drives my husband crazy, but hey! Jazzy just sits quietly and winds up staying outside far longer than she wants to because I don't know she wants in. Keoki jumps up and scratches loudly.. guess who gets first?
