Canā€™t help it. I really like this dog. Enjoy spoiling him. Although, he gained two pounds since we brought him home, so his meals are smaller now. šŸ§šŸŖšŸ©

  • Niceā€¼ļø One can never have to many collars.

PLEASE cut him back, and get his weight back to where it was when you first got him. Stella will have had him at the correct weight. Keep him there. For his own good. Stop indulging yourself by giving him too many extra calories he obviously doesn't need.

His time with you will be so much shorter if you let his organs get clogged with too much weight. A svelte, trim Basenji will be so much healthier, and fitter.

You could be killing him with kindness.

Measure his (decreased) daily food ration out and ONLY give him bits of that kibble as 'treats' - that way you are not piling on the weight. His daily intake will be rationed. And put him on a reducing diet to get the weight off - fast.

Green vegetables instead of too much kibble. Beans, brassicas, and meat, limited quantities.

News that he is back to his desired weight soon, please !!

  • Completely agree, Sally. Iā€™ve been checking his weight intermittently since bringing him home. I also check in with Stella a few times each week, so she knows whatā€™s happening. I let her know about the two pounds about a week before I posted here. She and I discussed it and came up with a plan. Heā€™ll be back to 24 soon. šŸ‘

I am not in your area, but ... you should know that dog training is about teaching you how to interact with your dog, as opposed to teaching your dog how to do things. Most area Kennel Clubs offer training where you are your dogs partner in the class. The things you will learn will last your lifetime. I applaud the non-punitive approach. A lot of people fly off the handle when their dog chews on the wrong thing, or doesn't quite have potty training down. One of the best things you can do is give them love when they do it right and don't react when they don't. Recognize that he's just a pup. You can trade an acceptable chew toy for your shoes, and you can avoid the problem by closing the closet door so your pup can't get to your shoes. Accidents will happen and learning to potty doesn't happen overnight. Just provide a lot of verbal love when the pup gets it right and don't react when he doesn't. Love and praise are the best tools in your training bag. Congrats on your pup. Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!

Nice looking dog! I'm tempted to get another too once Safi is a bit older.
