First Time Basenji Owner! Hello from Connecticut!

  • Hello Everyone!
My name is Todd I am about to become a new puppy papa to a little red and white male basenji from Klassic Basenjis in Ohio. Breeders named Sue and Jeff. They have one last appointment today and should be able to come home next weekend! Just wanted to introduce myself as I am excited to own my first Basenji! I'm a little nervous with everything going on in the world right now on ensuring that my puppy will get socialized properly since we are currently all social distancing here in CT due to COVID, but I am excited nonetheless.

Hope everyone is well and cannot wait to start this Basenji journey!

  • Welcome.... I too have Basenjis from Jeff (Klassic) I have known both for many, many years. Who are the sire and dam? Many of us are related by our Basenjis. You can meet my Basenjis on my website, link below

  • Thank you! The Sire: GCH. Dark Moon's Project Mayhem. Dam: GCH. Klassic's Merry Jones

  • @tjoseph91 Hello Todd... one of our girls is a daughter of Merry also... she had her first litter in December (CH Klassic's Joy Ride to Tanza-Jamaa)... a wonderful litter of 4 Tris, one male, 3 girls sired by GCHS ASTARTE'S SIR TRISTAN WITH PIPS AT KAZOR (Tristan)... you can see the pups on our website link below... I am sure you have a lovely pup from that cross. So we are related... ! Your boy is a 1/2 brother to our Joy. And also related to our C-Me (GCH DC Klassic-Tanza Color Me Tri, SC MC) as she is Joy's Grand Aunt... You can follow pedigrees at http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/ just put in the name of any of these.... Welcome again!

  • @tanza Wow that's awesome! I've never had a basenji but it's great to see the community feel this breed has with their owners! Thanks for the welcome! Sue and Jeff seem great, so It's nice to hear someone else has a basenji from them as well.

  • @tjoseph91 - Once you register the pup, let us know his registered name so that he can be added to the pedigree site that Sally Wallis provides http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/

  • Hello Todd,
    Welcome to the forum.
I've been partnering with Sue and Jeff as Jeff co-owns one of my Full Africans.
Sue and Jeff are the best and I wish you luck with your new furkid.

  • @tjoseph91Hey Todd, welcome. This is a great place to get some really fantastic help. We got our little guy a week before the shutdown here in Oregon and it has been wonderful to spend most of the day with my Zaki. We have really bonded. He was 12 weeks when we got him and I have had a change to teach him to sit, stay, come and do a great deal of leash training. We had him house broken in a few days (the beauty of nothing to do but watch you B-dog all day long) and we have only had one accident. Mine is very quiet and he knows to sit by the sliding door when he needs to go but if we don't know he is there, well thats when we had the accident. Have fun with your new best friend.

he knows to sit by the sliding door

I have heard of people teaching their pup to ring a bell by the sliders/door as a way of asking to be let out. I'm sure this would be great if someone were home. I'm not sure if the pup would be confused if it were ringing the bell and no one was there to open the door. (?) Probably a non-issue with these brilliant little ones. 🙂

  • @elbrant
In fact there is a 53 second YOUTUBE video of “Lucy the Basenji” who has been trained to ring a wind chime by the slider to go out to potty.

    @slents - hello there!

I joined this forum to learn more about B’s and the variety of their personalities. I’ve read many of the links in this and other sites and frankly the description of their behavior freaks me out. But my husband really likes the idea of one so I’m trying to educate myself.

It’s really encouraging to read that your pup is so responsive to you and well trained! Where did you get him?

    Thanks!

  • @annapolitan - Go to a responsible breeder... this is the key.... ask others about the breeder(s) you have talked to... find others that have pups from that breeder... They all have different dispositions... and the key to a good breeder is they understand and ASK what it is about a Basenji that you are interest in.... have you met them, spent time with them? How are they raised?... if you go the www.basenji.org you can find a link on how to interview a breeder... and you should.... you can also find that link on my website, link below. Know that most responsible breeders will tell the the negatives about the breed first... if you are still interested then the good.... for me... the first thing I tell people is you MUST have a sense of humor... you can go to www.basenji.org and search for breeders by state.... and this is no different then looking for a new car (with the exception that this is a living/breathing animal)... you need to do your research. Basenjis are NOT hyperallergic they do shed and do have dander. Basenjis are a hound, they hunt by sight and by scent... you need to understand this is inbred to them... and it is NOT something that you can "train" out of them. By the way, Todd got his pup from Klassic Basenjis.. By the way Todd, please let me know the sire/dam's registered name and the litter number for your pup... so that Sally can add to the Basenji Pedigree site... thanks...

  • Hi Todd! Welcome to the group! My little black and white Binti is no relation to your new pup but we want to say hi anyway! You are going to have SO much fun with your new little senji!!!!!!0_1585332410376_14563400_1244121988965952_1329599910172019782_n.jpg

  • @nancyss
Binti is beautiful! What a sweetheart!❤

  • @nancyss Binti is so precious!

  • @annapolitan Yes do your research for sure! I started my search and my research for a Basenji over a year and a half ago. I was on a waiting list for another breeder for 10 months and one of their dogs, unfortunately, didn't conceive. So there wasn't enough pups to go around, luckily Klassic Basenji's had a pup available and they've been so great and responsive to all my questions! I can't wait to take home my little guy!

  • @elbrant This is a great idea, he is so quiet that I sometimes step on his little feet as he serpentines around me at the sink. Thanks.

  • @tanza - thanks for your input. Yes, I’ve been in the dog world for many years (and I’m a cynical New Yorker) so I think I can sniff out a reputable breeder (preservation breeder I think is the new term?) From the ones that just “breed” By now. But I will check out your site to learn anything I can that is More Basenji specific.

Good point about a conscientious breeder pointing out the negatives first. And yes, I think our last Aussie forced me to relax and learn to laugh at myself and him a bit more... LOL. Excellent reco to ask others about any breeders I speak to. Most of my guys were rescues from rescue orgs, only 1 (Aussie 2.0) was from a breeder who was referred to me by someone who knew us both. I’ll have to step that up.

I’m allergic to dogs, technically, but am not looking for a hypo allergenic dog. I’ve had a Golden and Aussies, I think my husband thinks a Basenji’s shedding will be a great improvement! The hound thing will be new to us. I’m flexible across AKC groups, I just want a dog that will suit our lifestyle.

I’ve reached out to Sue Kite at Klassic (thanks) As well as a few breeders closer to where we are in Annapolis MD.

I’m just glad I found this forum so I know that not all B’s have crazy separation anxiety and can be engaged enough with their owners to work with us on some obedience training 😆. THANK YOU!

  • @kembe thank you. She is a sweetheart and the light of our lives!
