Shedding and beefing up my basenji

Basenji Talk
  • Ok my basenji is a yr old and she is shedding more than normal... I'm just curious if it's her winter coat she is shedding? Or something else. Also I feel she is too thin. she eats throughout the day but im thinking she either needs to increase her diet or maybe introduce something else to help beef her up also thought about having her start pulling weights to help increase her muscle mass. Any ideas or suggestions

  • Shedding is normal this time of year.... and a 1yr old is most likely shedding their puppy coat. Have you talk to her breeder? Ask if this is normal for your pups bloodlines? And what does the Vet say about her weight? How big is she (height and weight). One other suggestion, do not free feed, you will really never know how much they are eating. Feed on a schedule, 2x's a day. Make sure to measure out the food so you know exactly what they are eating. Some depending on their build are leaner then others.

  • @tanza Jasmine eats twice a day and I give about a cup a feeding maybe a little bit more. Also she weighs 15lbs and is a little over 16in height

  • 15 pounds seems a little thin for a 16 inch dog. Talk to your breeder and also your vet. Perhaps she has a digestive issue and is not absorbing enough protein and other nutrients.

  • @drew82 you should give about 1 cup for every 10 pounds a dog weighs. My male is a little over a year and is 26 pounds. I give half a cup in the morning half a cup mid afternoon and a full cup at dinner. Along with the wet food or meat and snacks throughout the day. You would want to give 1 1/2 cups through out the day and increase as your dogs weight increases. Females typically will weigh a little less then males but usually only a couple pounds

  • Have you considered feeding raw food (meat and vegetables)? It worked wonders for our B's coat and overall health.

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

My first question is why are you bathing her every two weeks? Is she roling in manure or something else with a nasty stench? I have 4 basenjis in my house. Two that are going on 2 years old: One bitch was shown in early July… she was bathed that weekend. One bitch was shown back in March.... she was bathed in late March. The two 5 month old pups were bathed in mid-August for the first time. I don't have grass in my yard.. just pine trees and weeds and wood chips... which means they are in dirt all the time. I wipe them down with a hot wet towel when they come in... but that is it. I must preface this with the fact that I HATE DUST AND DIRT of any nature to touch me. If they were dusty, I would wipe them down. But bathing them every two weeks? HECK NO. That is why I have basenjis... I am not a groomer, and hate dealing with grooming... bathe for shows, and very little else. And my dogs are CLEAN to the touch.... Perhaps you should bathe them a bit less often and use a super good scrubber to scratch out the dead hair… that should be enough I'd think.... of course, I am coming from the point that I don't have dogs that get an undercoat... so perhaps it is quite different. Please don't take offense at what I suggest... I just can't imagine having to bathe a basenji that often.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
