Canine Influenza

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • In about a month I am going to China on business and I am looking for a kennel in my area (Westchester, NY). I have found one that I really like, however, they require the canine influenza vaccine (most of the kennels in the area do). I asked my breeder first and she told me not to get it done due to the fact that basenjis are sensitive to it. I have been doing some research and it looks like some owners get it and others don't. My vet said that it is up to me. I am just trying to see if I should get it or not because I need enough time between both shots. Any suggestions?

  • The risks are low, and canine influenza can be deadly, though mostly it simply makes them very sick and VERY contagious for up to 3 weeks. If I were boarding or showing, I'd get it done.

Risks are similar to any vaccine. It can't give your dog the flu, it isn't 100 percent in stopping infection, but highly effective in decreasing both effects and contagious levels. The new one and old one have similar research:

What are the possible side effects?
There were no side effects in the vaccine field safety trial, which included 746
dogs of various ages and breeds. As with any vaccine, allergic reactions may
occur in a small percentage of animals. Adverse events reported since the 2009
conditional license approval are comparable to those seen for other canine
    vaccines.<<

  • @DebraDownSouth, luckily the kennel I am looking into informed me that I can get a waiver from my vet, so hopefully he will assist me in that matter! Thanks!

I am so sorry your girl is not herself. I experienced this with my little chihuahua. Her little bed was right next to ours, and she would get up and walk in tight circles many times at night. I would hold her, calm her, and get her back to bed. She still ate well, she never gave up on that. She often got lost in our house. I think the crowning blow was when her favorite friend, one of my dear friends, came over as she often did, and Stella refused to have anything to do with her. Before, she would sit on her lap for hours. I knew it was time; I tearfully told my veterinarian, a close friend who tells it like it is, that Stella still knew me. Her response? "She is used to you." Hard to let tiny Stella go. She was seven when I got her, and hadn't had much of a life until she came to us. I feel so sad that her good life had to come to an end. She was an uninspired little agility dog, but she LOVED it. She was also the softest little cuddle. My Tess Basenji is sixteen. She is okay, but having lived through Stella, I know that she is slipping. I want to say goodby to her while she still knows me and wants my company. I will put you and your pup in my prayers.

The good thing is she is crate trained. Nika was not so it made it more difficult. She slept on the couch and I had to put the cushions in plastic garbage bags and then a water proof mattress pad on that as a few times she peed in the middle of the night and I would hear her yelp like she was upset for having done that and jump off the couch. I would just remove and replace the sheet, comfort her and tell her it's OK and put her back on the couch to go back to sleep.

@shankara_n: I am trying to locate a photo of the canine genome. The double helix with full colour and letters. This is for a tattoo up my spine. Really?? Interesting!
