Looking a little thin

  • I have 2 basenji pups: a tri male born 1/2015, and a red female 12/2014 that I got about 8 weeks ago. I can see their hips, and barely see the ribs, but have been doing nothing but increase their food without seeing much improvement on their boniness. We are very active, but pushing 3 cups/day for each. We tried a Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet, as well as Blue Buffalo and just cannot seem to put any weight on. I have been adding a bit of Olive Oil on their foods for slightly dry skin, and they also get frozen peanut-butter kongs. They have great looking coats, tons of energy, but seem really lean/skinny. Any suggestions or recommendations so I don't feel like a bad Basenji mom with bony-hipped pups?

Do you live in the country? Is it possible your dog is hearing wolves, coyotes or coyo/dogs? I've noticed the time you mention is when packs in my area become vocal, although it never seems to bother my dogs. It's possible your dog is reacting to something only she hears, and I find wild canid packs are most vocal in late fall/winter/early spring. I often hear them around 3pm on cold, clear nights when leaving for work, it doesn't have to be a full moon. What DOES bother my guys is the presence of bears, fisher cats etc around the property. If you have lynx or cougar in your area, they really seem to stir things up.

This I always my "rule of thumb" and only based on my experience but frequent long urinations= possible UTI and several quick squirts=marking….but every dog is different, even so my mind still automatically looks for those signals

@Mango: I can't wait to have a little B ripping around the house… guess I'm a masochist, but it does sound like a lot of fun. Yes, exactly Mango. I too await the day where the Basenji 500 takes place in my home. It should be fun - we have hardwood floors! :D

Thanks for your replies. I guess in the spontanaity of the moment I did as I do with my other dogs, a no and then a quick taking the thing away since I'm boss and I'm the owner of everything ultimately. I do believe Rowdy was not being the bad growling type bite – he took his front teeth and nipped at my arm, pinching it, but it hurt! I will try to work on the "leave it" command, since I taught that to my mom's poodle and it worked well. Rowdy is smart and is finally getting some of the house rules down. Though he's sneaky when he isn't resting beside you and you forget to watch him... :)
