Looking a little thin

Behavioral Issues
  • I have 2 basenji pups: a tri male born 1/2015, and a red female 12/2014 that I got about 8 weeks ago. I can see their hips, and barely see the ribs, but have been doing nothing but increase their food without seeing much improvement on their boniness. We are very active, but pushing 3 cups/day for each. We tried a Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet, as well as Blue Buffalo and just cannot seem to put any weight on. I have been adding a bit of Olive Oil on their foods for slightly dry skin, and they also get frozen peanut-butter kongs. They have great looking coats, tons of energy, but seem really lean/skinny. Any suggestions or recommendations so I don't feel like a bad Basenji mom with bony-hipped pups?

Our Lilly digs up dandelion roots which she loves to eat. She also likes the bitter tasting dandelion leaves and people eat them in salad as well so I let her eat them. She doesn't have any stomach problems after eating them and it may provide certain nutrients which are good for her. IDK.

@MikeP: Hello all….My beloved pooch passed away six months ago and I am starting my journey to find a new best friend. After much research, I have decided a Basenji is the dog for me. That said, I am trying to locate Basenji owners in Tampa. Before taking the plunge, I would like to talk with local owners and meet their dogs. They are certainly not a common pet and I would like to meet one(or more) to see just how they are in person. Are there any Basenji owners out there in Tampa? I would be great to hear from you. That is great…. we always suggest meeting with Basenjis and Basenji Owners before deciding this is the right breed of dog for your new forever companion!!! Good luck in your search.

@Mango: I can't wait to have a little B ripping around the house… guess I'm a masochist, but it does sound like a lot of fun. Yes, exactly Mango. I too await the day where the Basenji 500 takes place in my home. It should be fun - we have hardwood floors! :D

I remember Caesar as a puppy would poop in the Petsmart every time we went until he was old enough to be fixed. Never pooped in the house. I thought it was because he was a little guy. When Cairo was a super pup and would go to petsmart, I took puppy pads with me. We would walk around in the store together. When I saw him start stressing, or sniffing, or whining, I would throw the pad down even if I looked like a crazy B mom. It worked every time!! I wouldnt fret too much until you are at an age that is beyond Abby being fixed. Some of that stuff is pure puppy…..
