    Hi! I've been researching basenjis for quite a while and they seem amazing. In February, I'll be getting my first basenji. For a while, I've known about these forums and read a lot of posts. I decided I should make an account. So hello! :D

    Hi, what an exciting time it is waiting for a puppy. Just make sure you have done your research and found a responsible breeder, makes all the difference to have a healthy well adjusted good temperament pup. Can't wait to see your first pup photo's.

    I am so excited for my puppy to come home. I have made sure the breeder is responsible and I have done a lot of research on the breed. February is just so far away

    The day will come faster than you think :) My advise to you would be to start getting your home ready before the little Angel/Tazmanian devil arrives. Get as much gear (bonus if you find items on sale) you possibly can prior to the arrival (a must have: a good water bottle spray which will stop and get the attention of any animal & human in their track). Most importantly, puppy/dog proof the house and yard.

    Congrats on the new puppy. Between now and then, try to visit some basenji homes. :) Nothing is so good as one on one experience!

    It's hard to wait but take it from me; enjoy not living your life by the clock while you can..once the puppy comes you will find yourself looking at that clock and setting timers to go out to potty, eating…enjoy peaceful sleep and freedom..because once the puppy comes its a prison sentence for a little while (not to sound like a downer..lol) I was so excited to pick up Oakley that I picked him up a few days short of ten weeks; I wish I prepared a bit more mentally for such a huge event..Oakley was a tough cookie...so glad puppyhood is over! I miss the tiny body and cute little wrinkles but that's what pictures are for!! Lol
    Congratulations and don't rush it, be excited for it but enjoy the time

    @SethS Hi & Welcome Seth! Your new girl is gorgeous!! I just love the red & whites and the brindle & whites! My first girl, Darla was red & white so that color really tugs hard at my heart. My second, Dorie was brindle & white & now, brindles tug pretty hard at my heart too but, I know I can't have the darker brindle....too much like my Dorie. I'm not saying I'd get another red/white just because of the color.....there would have to be more than the color! But your new girl is really gorgeous!! I'm sorry about your other one & I'm sure that you look to see if the gate is closed now. It's sad that we learn a lesson like that but I bet you don't have that accident again! Congrats on your new sweetheart!!

    When they are with their littermates and any adults, during play when they bite to hard, the one getting bite will scream at the biter… and adults will strongly correct... this is when they learn "soft" bite... so sounds like your Rocco did not get this... This happens if removed from the adults and/or other littermates too early... So as stated, all play stops... also, I suggest that if the bite is too hard, scream/yell very loud and then stop all play

    Before you get a puppy… go to the Basenji Club of Canada and Basenji Club of America websites and read up on Fanconi and other heritable diseases. ANY breeder not testing for these disease is NOT someone you should spend your time or money on one of their puppies. Too bad you didn't look 4-5 months ago... there was a lovely litter of Khani's pups up in Drumheller! Best of luck to you!

    @mauigirl: Welcome to the forum! Do you know if your female had Fanconi?? Thanks for the information. Skylar was her name and she did not have fanconi. We do not know what caused the infection, but she lived for three and one half years after her diagnosis. The vet originally stated about 6 months, but we treated her with a blood pressure medication, 81mg asprin and later on malox. She was active and spry right up to the last 3 - 4 weeks. We do as everyone should, check our dogs with the strip test. Also thanks for the welcome…:)

    Hi and welcome! When you let her out, I hope you are out also. Sadly, underground fencing is very dangerous… call the closest 10 shelters to find how many dogs they pick up with collars. They get excited, run through it, then can't come back. Also, while it might normally keep your dog in, it won't keep others OUT. But with supervision, they are GREAT so that they get freedom but you are there if a problem arises.
