  • hello –

my name is Matt gerdes-- I live In iowa Usa--- I currently have a 13 year old basenji named Lexus( we call her lex- or PIP( after pippy longstocking- because of lex's long "socks") I joined the basenji forums as I am hoping to learn how to best care for an aging basenji and make her final years with me as graceful as possible-- She is my first any only Basenji and she has really touched my heart like no other dog I have ever had-- It has been an absolute gift and honor to have shared my life with her-- We have been through 100's of adventures together and she has enriched my life in countless ways-- She has gotten me through the worst of times and has always been the most loyal and insightful friend-- A true gift from above-- I am also considering aquiring a new basenji show puppy in the next year or so-And I am hoping to meet some great contacts and develop new friends as well as mentors if /when I do decide to take that leap into the show world-- I am open to any and all input and would also love to see your basenji friends - both show and companion. looking forward to hearing from you all-- Have an amazing day-- barrrrrrrrroooooo!! :)

@DebraDownSouth said in Hello! New Member: If your dog is getting too thin, give more in maybe 10 to 15 percent increases. Getting fat? Cut back 10 to 15 percent til you hit ideal, then add a little to maintain. " The eye of the master maketh the horse" applies to dogs just as well. With practice, you notice quickly if your animal is gaining or losing, and what his/her ideal weight looks like.....

Lakers13 - all this will be very disappointing to you now that you are on the verge of getting your puppy but I hope you'll be taking this very well meaning advice. I don't know this breeder and so wouldn't dream to make comment but of course these other resepctable breeders do and you've heard from others' experienes with dogs affected with Fanconi. I'm sure at this time of year you'll soon be able to find a healthy puppy form a genuine breeder.

@Nicola: Hi Jenny! :D Oh what a shame. :( I was undecided on posting about SKC on the other site, I wish I had done now! Not to worry, we'll meet someday, I'm sure! And of course, I'd love to meet your gang too. I remember hearing someone saying "….Basenji cross" as I was walking by! Who'd have thought it was you! ;) Yes that was probably me lol. Roxy looked very sweet and I'm sure we will meet eventually:D

You know I've always thought I might go back and get that nasty sucker - but probably wouldn't let me cross the border with a weapon. I've always wished I just let Jacque kill the darn thing - rather than me jump it and break both ankles. Apologies to those of you who don't know the story of the Chronicles of Sarnia Legend of the Black Squirel - this may seem like an inside story and it is. In any event - hard to imagine Rose that the dogs are that age - could that mean - gasp - that we are aging as well??????
