  • My name is Bill Farthing and I live in St. Louis with my Basenji girl Binty Buttanna (Buttons) (Binty is Arabic for "little girl"). She is the second Basenji who has owned me. The first was Anteffa Buttanna (also Buttons) in England during the 70s. My first Buttons had most of the B traits which often give the breed a bad name but in spite of it she was loved dearly. She traveled with I and my wife and crossed the Rainbow Bridge in Arabia in 86 at 14. My new little girl is too good to be true. she is gentle and loving, not destructive, and she has never met a person that she dislikes. She came to live with me shortly after I lost my wife and has been my best friend ever since. She was nine weeks old and already had good knowledge of training humans. We have nice long walks every morning and we share our naps during the day. Life is good for Buttons and her old dad.

Congrats on your puppy…. has he (or his sire/dam) been health tested for Fanconi and PRA with the DNA test? Very important this if this has not been done for his Sire/Dam that you have your boy tested. And even if they have been tested, never hurts to follow up with having him done also.

Welcome and so sorry to hear about the health issues of your two B's…. Thank you for opening up your home to them... And Thank Goodness we now have DNA tests for Fanconi so that no Basenji ever has to suffer with this horrible affliction.

I look forward to your pictures. I'm a technophobe too - I keep telling myself I can do it but so far haven't posted any. One of my bitches was spoiled for the show ring by such a judge who didn't know how to approach a hound (although he was a Saluki judge and should have!). She was experienced at showing as well but was traumatised because when she backed away at his front on, silly voice approach she nearly fell from the table! Of course she blamed the fall on his approach. I worked on her intensively but to no avail. Yes, Basenjis on the whole are friendly and they never forget a friend either!

@Nicola: Hi Jenny! :D Oh what a shame. :( I was undecided on posting about SKC on the other site, I wish I had done now! Not to worry, we'll meet someday, I'm sure! And of course, I'd love to meet your gang too. I remember hearing someone saying "….Basenji cross" as I was walking by! Who'd have thought it was you! ;) Yes that was probably me lol. Roxy looked very sweet and I'm sure we will meet eventually:D
