Dirty Ears?

Basenji Talk

  • Does anyone else experience constant dirty ears? I cleaned out my little girls ears a week and a half ago with a couple of cue tips. She has quite a few crevices that hide dirt really well. Well I noticed they were dirty again this morning, so I cleaned them again. Her ears don't show any irritation and they don't smell bad, so I'm thinking it's not mites. And we do frequent the dog park so she gets to rough house with other dogs quite a bit. Does anyone else share my experience? Dirt? or Mites?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

  • Could be an yeast infection… and none of mine have had constant dirty ears that I can remember... but young pups do get yeast infections...

With Basenjis ear cleaning is something typically not necessary

  • Our little girl came home at 10 weeks and had dirty ears. She then got some redness. On her vet visit they confirmed she had a yeast infection in her ears. Medicine cleared it up, and she's got super shiny ears now.:)

These are really things you should be talking to the breeder about….. And if the sire was an import, could be as already noted just take time for the ears to stay up, or they might never.... same with the tail... Note also, it is not uncommon when they start to loose the baby teeth that the ears don't stand up....

What about putting cotton balls in his ears before going out to the beach or dog park or whatever? I have heard of this being done before and then all you do is pull them out afterwards and dispose of them? Apparently if your dog is a 'head out the window doing 60' type you are supposed to do this because if you don't your dog can do deaf because of the wind noise.

I really believe this helps. Uzie does have separation anxiety and just about 10 min before I leave, I put on a station from Directv that has easy listening. I enjoy it when I am home and do notice that all three of my pups do seem to settle down on their beds and enjoy it! I thank you for posting the link, my girlfriend needs this for her aging Silky who gets so worked up during a storm that he defecates all through the house…..

@sharronhurlbut: My basenji girl always shows me up. When I am walking the dogs, folks come over and say "oh, are those the barkless dogs?" My girl ALWAYS gives one of her warning BARKS when they say this. Laugh. I tell the folks yes, they are barkless, except for my girl! So, then discussion starts, and I explain how they are not MUTE. But my girl gets me everytime! That's so funny considering we have the opposite experience. Manny baroooos like crazy at home but when we're in public and we want him to do it, he doesnt. Go figure. They have a mind of their own.

If he has only just started itching you may have caught it early. It would be better to have it checked out before starting to put things in his ears that could make the situation worse. Yeast loves damp dark environments.
