  • Hi All. I have been researching Bansenji's for 5 months and finally got one on Saturday. Little guy is a ball og energy and I have been trying to direct it all ready. He somehow found a way to release the sliding mechanism on the crate to get out on Sunday. Imagine my surprise when I left for 20 minutes and came back to find an empty crate with No Basenji. I have never seen anything like it and I'm looking forward to learn information from the site.

  • Ha! The things they do…....amazes me. I know your pain, mine escaped several times from his x-pen......took forever for me to figure out how to keep him in there.

Nosework is a fun way to exercise them ; even 6 rounds can tire them out. It's cheap, and you don't have to go outside necessarily. I wish I had started my dog when he was a wee pup, BUT once they get to an 'advanced level' you can hide things for long periods of time and they have the persistence to keep going until they find the scent. The classes are nice if you want to figure out how to do things the 'proper' way, but if you are strapped for time and money they have lots of free tips online. Just start out slow and work your way up.

There's a few videos of basenjis escaping, on youtube, that are fun to watch. This site is great, lots of good ideas being passed around.

  • Congrats and welcome. Who did you get your Basenji from? Many of us are related by our Basenjis.

  • Hi, how old is your pup and do you have any photo's to share.

  • Recommend joining one of the local basenji clubs/groups for meetups and play dates. What part of California are you from, lots of CA members on the forums and Facebook.

She has been fixed. As for the falconi, I dont think any of the basenjis that I have have every been tested for it. as for the country hounds and hearts place. I went by the address listed on the site and it appears that no one has been there for a while. Very scary looking place.. overgrown, strange smell, fence pieced together with kennel/crate doors, vacant car. I called the number and it was disconnected and I tried a second number and have been waiting for over a week for someone to call back. We are going to give it the college try to get her "normal" but I want to make sure that I am not doing her a dis-service. I have time before we are slated to move but I also want to make sure that she would be happy. I know deep down that I have not been a great owner to her but I love her very much and don't want to see her harmed in any way. Thanks everyone for the coments and suggestions

First time, that's great; congratulations to her! My Ezri was perfect at six months. Not any more, she waited to be a teenager before subjecting me to public humiliation.
