Suddenly Destroying Crate

Behavioral Issues
  • it seems like Saavik has developed some separation anxiety with her crate… She has been fine up until this point and accustomed to her routine during the week. We have only had her about a month but everything was going smoothly til Thursday Zack was home with her most of the day, and he put her in the crate around 2:30PM. Normally she wines for 10 minutes and settles down.. I got home at 5:30 and she had pushed her tray out of the crate and destroyed her blanket. The vet said she may have some mild anxiety and gave me an all natural med in the form of a chicken liver dog treat..No issues on friday... Saturday gave her the dog treat which she was on day 3 of at that point... put her in the crate and went to the gym for literally 1 hour returned and found she had started chewing the plastic tray!!! Sunday same thing gone to gym for one hour and she had destroyed the plastic tray... she was put back in the crate a few hours later while we left for some errands...when we came back she was fine no chewing of her new blanket etc... We are going to invest in a metal crate tray and hope that will stop the destruction... She is perfect when out of the crate with the exception of being one nosy basenji!!! she sleeps in the bed with us all night... So I don't think she is getting too much crate time

  • What besides the blanket/tray is in the crate for her to chew on/play with? And before putting her in the crate, do you play with her to tire her out? And have you tried a kong filled with goodies to keep her busy?

  • She has a Kong and a chewy squeaker in there with her… Most of the time she has is tired out by the time we put her in there... It's weird b/c all of the times we've had incidents she had plenty of play time before the crate... our weekly morning routine is that i feed her and take her our before work and she gets back in bed with zack and sleeps another hour or so before he goes to work... She never chews anything during this type of routine... Seems to be happening on weekends on days off from work.

Just thought I'd share an update on this. I removed the blankets from the crate and replaced them with a mattress. We have been strict about her only staying in the crate at night. When we have had accidents I have cleaned up, with a dog urine killing spray, and placed her back in the crate. Everything is progressing smoothly, not had any accidents for over a week now. So it's been a rather quick turnaround, lovely to have her properly crate trained again. Thank you all for sharing advice on the situation.

mine are all in the same room - it's the den and has a large sliding glass door so everyone can see out. Digital, the brindlewonderkid, is left to go where ever he likes. Usually he's in the den or bedroom.

hard to say if crating was a big negative in her puppy place for her that could account for her behavior now? Have you called her breeder to ask her/him? They sometimes can give you wonderful ideas that can help faster than the rest of us because they know their puppy.

@luvsmy2bs: Have things gotten any better? Just curios,,,,,,I was reading your post and felt really sorry for you. Currently I have turned my dd's bedroom – thankfully she's away at college -- into a kennel. There is a 6 x 4' ex-pen w/top taking up the entire floor space of her room. Both Jazzy's and Keoki's crates are in there. At night he sleeps okay in that ONLY as long as BOTH crates remain open into the pen. If I close either crate, he flips out. During the day when we have to go out, as yesterday and today, I have to remove all "real" bedding and leave just paper toweling. Yesterday I made the mistake of leaving a small piece of carpet UNDER Jazzy's crate, and when we got home it had been pulled out and torn to shreds. It is obvious that he still wigs out, even in the large pen w/Jazz as today I noticed that the front of his crate {above the door, which was open} has been all chewed up, even though he was not shut in. Still working with the behaviorist; she and the vet are thinking long-term meds may be in order. That is still being discussed. He's going to hurt himself one day if we don't get a handle on this...and eventually dd is going to be home from college; then what? We can't travel with him like this either.
