First Week with our Basenji

Basenji Talk
  • We adopted Saavik from BRAT last Saturday and it's been an interesting week to say the least. She is very sweet and has a great temperament overall… We were told that she doesn't Baroo, but the minute she got in the house she let out a big Baroo and commenced sniffing the house... She has been pretty good about going in her crate when we eat dinner and hasn't had any accidents in the house!!! WAHOO!

Wondering if anyone has observed their B do this silly little thing she has started... she will run up to a wall put her paws up and then do this exorcist thing with her head and look back at us....It's the funniest thing ever. So far only destruction has been shredding toilet paper and devouring "Lashes" her stuffed piggy.... I was unloading the dryer yesterday and walked out of the room for a minute only to return and find her in the dryer!!!! she jumped out before I could get her picture.

Here are some recent pictures of her :)

  • She obviously knew she was home when she got there and let out a big Baroo! Glad to see that everything is going well for you. B's do all sorts of funny things, shredding TP is just the tip of the iceberg. Good luck to her and you!

  • What a beautiful color she is! So awesome that you adopted :-)

  • She looks like a doll and sounds like one too! Yes, the baroo was done to tell you how happy she was. As for the weird head positions, we get those here too! I think they are known as 'bendy heads' by many of us here.

  • Bendy heads, bendy body, the will smack you when you aren't paying attention-all kinds of lovely things. Congrats on the adoption.

  • She sounds like a charmer for sure! :)

  • What a lovely girl! She sounds all Basenji to me. :D congrats on your adoption!!

  • Thanks everyone…she is very cute...but she knows it too!!! She is a diva for sure....I'll share more pictures as soon as I can get her to sit still long enough to snap one :)

  • Sounds like you are having a good time with her.

Glad to see she is settling in and taking over :D

  • Congratulations! She is lovely, and obviously happy to be with you.

  • Beautiful Basenji! She looks like a Saavic too! That's so appropriate for a basenji: half Vulcan, half Romulan!

  • Haha!!! thanks so much! I'm glad you got the reference with her name!! We love Star Trek and couldn't think of a more appropriate name for her with those little pointy ears :)

  • Good luck on getting a picture when she is still, if she is anything like our 2 she won't be still very muvh. Our Bitty does this thing, when she comes up on the bed at bedtime she will flop down facing directly away from us and then bend her head back mover her shoulder to look at us.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

I haven't read the whole thread, but I understand a bit about the 'cost' of owning a basenji. It sometimes goes beyond what one might think of as 'normal' dog costs. I lost a lazyboy chair and quite a few clothes to my first fella. My second and current guy, not so much. I spent many dollars on their health; first guy had heartworm when I got him; just got past having a large fatty tumor removed from the leg of my current guy. I haven't been on the forum in a while but what I came on to say was; none of this matters…I had a pretty crappy day of a whole bunch of little things that amount to nothing individually, but taken together - crappy. When all was done and I came home, my boy was happy to see me, played with me, 'listened' to me and made me happy. That is priceless! BTW: Mods, I like the new color scheme, FWIW.

There's something invigorating about cold snow on little basenji toesies! My Abbey loved all the snow we had last winter (unusual for us) but she was terrified of the neighbors' snow man!!

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
