Basenji rescued from pond in Colorado!!

  • WESTMINSTER, Colo. – Firefighters rescued a dog from an icy pond in Westminster on Thursday afternoon.
The fire department was called after the small dog fell into the water at about 2:30 p.m. at Faversham Park on 73rd Avenue.
The B shift from Westminster Fire Station #1 donned ice rescue gear, slid out on the ice and got the dog, according to spokeswoman Diana Allen.

Allen said the dog's owner took the pup home to dry it off and warm it up.
The owner of the dog contacted 7NEWS and said the dog is a 4-year-old basenji named Bello. The owner said Bello was in a walking harness on a leash when he ran after some ducks on the pond and the leash snapped. She added that Bello had never been on ice before and he slid into the water when he couldn't stop in time.
Westminster Fire issued a reminder that it is important to keep your dog on a leash and never go out on the ice yourself to save your pet.

So glad the pup was saved. That is SO scary!!

  • Awww Poor baby. The two things basenji's hate most, cold and water. So glad it had a good ending and I hope he's none the worse for wear.

  • Oh, wow, I'm glad the rescuers were so quick! That water had to have been freezing!

It's always so nice to have a story with a happy ending.

  • So glad the rescuers were able to get him out!

  • Thanks heavens for the folks who will do this rescue for an animal in need.

Cute pup. She has all the markings of a basenji. Sometimes a little mix of another breed in her is good. It will help with not having the genetic problems basenjis have.

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

@DebraDownSouth: By original, do you mean the breeders or are they the ones who turned her over to rescue? Glad she is in a loving home! Debra, it is Lolly's original owner who was concerned for her, for some reason she had to give her up, the second owner put her with the dogs trust instead of giving her back. Lolly came originaly from a petshop  I have now on request from Lolly's new owner been able to put them in touch with each other so that information can be shared. Lolly seems as if she's got a super new home.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!

"We believe he's Basenji and Jack Russell. Actually, I think he's perfect for a disaster work because he can crawl into anything. He can climb on anything. He's like part dog, part cat and part monkey. He can go anywhere. It's amazing. Dogs know how to find things with their nose, naturally." i had always heard part dog, part cat, but throw monkey in there, hahaha. what a wonderful story, jessi.
