Just Want to Clarify ???

  • Hi guys,

Been away from the B Forum for ages, (soooooo busy), and just starting to get Vanda's health testing started, for her next year's breeding, (fingers crossed !!!), and I was wondering if I could just clarify a few things, about Fanconi testing from those in the know !!! Im time poor at the moment, so dont have time to find the info myself, sorry to be a pain :-)…

Ive added her to the Canine Phenome Project, (which I think I did before I got Ochre and Saba Fanconi tested), is this still necessary ???

Do I order the Fanconi Testing kits through OFA now ??? Pay first, then get them sent out ??? Do I need to get it done by the Vet, or at home by myself ???

Sorry to be a pain, I know the info is through here, just so lacking in time to do the research myself :-(...

  • We just orderd it at Ofa, payed and got the test at home.
You can test by yourselfe, we did a little swab in their mouth, put the stuff on the special sheet and send it back.
Then it's waiting for the results!

You always can send OFA an email, they are always very friendly to help and guide you.

    Fingers crossed for good health!

  • You do not have to do the Genome registry.
You go straight to OFA, order the kit, swab (REALLY SCRUB to get enough!), send in:

It is recommended that you still register Basenjis with Canine Phenome Project

  • @tanza:

It is recommended that you still register Basenjis with Canine Phenome Project

Is that also recommended for dogs from (for example) Holland? And how do we do that?

  • Yes, it is recommended that all basenjis worldwide register with the Canine Phenome Project and that owners update the information as their dogs age. The information that is gathered from the CPP, is one of the sources BCOA has to keep track of what may be developing issues in the breed or where we may need to collect more data. The more people that participate and accurately report the statistics on their dog the better the picture we have of where the breed stands.

Michelle, I am so very sorry. :( I know it is hard, but try to not focus on their screw up. They didn't hurt HER, they stressed you. Focus on how much loved that dear dog was and that you gave her a fantastic last day. I wish caring could ease your hurt, but it doesn't– but know you are, in fact, cared for. Thank you for sharing her with us. ((hugs))

@YodelDogs: I cannot even begin to fathom any normal diagnostic tests that would cost $1,000? A senior profile at my vet clinic includes a physical exam, complete blood panel, urinalysis, and fecal exam is is only about $100. LOL give me your vet's name. At my vet it's nearly 200. I'll drive to Atlanta! To the OP, yes get urine tested for infection first. Bladder/kidney could cause lots of pain walking and picking up. Start simple. Also, on the weight….I know folks here get tired of my saying it, but... first treat for worms even if none show up in fecal. DO NOT USE OTC, get from vet. Then, order cyproheptidine. It is a cheap antihistamine that works miracles with increasing appetite. My basenji was getting to the bone stage, massive testing... all normal. She simply didn't care if she ate. No matter what your vet says, you don't go by AMOUNT for what is right, you go by results. If they eat and are thin, they need MORE FOOD or food with higher calories. Also, you might try something like FASTRACK, healthy bacteria which helps them USE the food they eat much better.

Today I had put Jazzy's morning bicarb tab in her mouth and was holding her, petting her, rubbing her throat –usually a pretty successful and stress-free way to get her to swallow her pills -- and she managed to spit the bicarb out. Keoki, ever on the alert for anyone getting some treat and constantly fearing that he is missing out, pounced on that tablet and ate it. You could tell he didn't like it, and kept licking his lips afterward as if he was trying to get rid of something nasty. But he kept it and ate it --wasn't ABOUT to let Jazz get something he couldn't have. What a dork. LOL

@basi: This is what I liked about the German system and many other countries in europe, being that all dogs have to be tested before they can be bred from. @tanza: Is the DNA Fanconi test reconized as a required test in those countries in Europe that require pre-testing? And it is really no different here… most have or are testing, but there are still people that do not and still have their heads in the sand about testing... I wish that all testing was public knowledge like the Fanconi test.... like hips, eyes, etc... Following more in depth from Basi, she is also meaning that in Germany breeders will recieve VERY hefty fines for breeding without the proper testing and permissions from the breed club. They can have their kennel license (of sorts) revoked, be denied from entering shows and registering dogs of their breeding or from other breeders). A dog has to be of a certain age, and received a set amount of show awards before it can be entered into the breeding permissions exam. Then a actual show judge and member of the breed club evaluate the dogs to be entered into the stud books.
  • Do you think it was just a fluke???
