    Hey all,

    My name is Nate, in Columbus OH! I've been lurking around for a bit reading all the helpful information on here and finally wanted to formally introduce myself! I've been researching B's as my first "on my own" dog (I'm a 24 year old young professional), and was really excited to meet a pack tonight! It absolutely solidified my love of Basenji's and I feel confident that they're the breed for me. Though it'll be a few months before I get to welcome a B into my home, I'm excited to keep reading all I can and be active here in the forum.

    Welcome to the Forum. Another great resource of info is the Basenji Club of America's website - basenji.org. There's tons of info for prospective new owners as well as great historical info in the Basenji University section of the site. You might check it out.

    So are you on a waiting list, and if so which breeder - I have a friend who is a breeder in Columbus - Kyle @ Kaleonahe.

    Good luck in your search for a basenji companion. We went to meet our breeders pack before bringing Watson home and it was a great experience.

    I am looking forward to seeing pictures when you do get your basenji.

    Yes! Actually, the Kaleonahe Basenjis were the ones I met last night! Steve and Kyle were awesome people and extremely knowledgeable about the breed. They let me meet their puppies, their teenagers and their adult dogs at separate times to get the full B experience. One thing I quickly learned is don't visit B's with Starbucks in hand :P

    I spent about 3.5 hours with them last night talking about everything Basenji related. I have a really good feeling about them as breeders and the quality of dog they produce. That said, I'm planning on meeting two more breeders this week (Sue Kite with Klassic Basenjis and CarolAnn Worsham with HiCotn Basenjis to meet their dogs and see how they live), so I'm interested to see how breeders differ from one to the other.

    I think the hardest part about the whole thing will be the wait! But, good things come to those who wait I suppose.

    Congrats on doing your homework! And be sure that you check out health testing at www.offa.org yourself. Don't rely on what you might be told. All you need is the registered name or registration number of the sire and dam to search the site. This is not to say that the breeders you are visiting are not responsible, just that it is always good to check it out yourself.

    hi Nate - welcome, and I am excited for you, as this time last year I was waiting for my pup Kipawa! As Pat mentioned, do get the names of the parent dogs and check up on them yourself on the offa website. This will give you HUGE peace of mind when you make your final decision. How puppies are raised also plays a huge part on what your puppy's temperament will be, so visiting the breeder once the puppies are born is imperative. I would also say that you want to know that if anything happens, and I mean anything, that the breeder will want the dog back. I would shy away from someone who does not put this in the contract you will sign.

    So happy you are putting in the time researching the breed, a basenjis needs and the breeders. Such an exciting time, and I look forward to seeing pictures. You'll find, if you haven't already, that we love pictures. :)

    P.S. It is so cool when you find out who your puppy is related to, because lots of people on here are 'related' by their dogs!

    Welcome Nate. I'm so pleased that you've done your research before launching into Basenji ownership. I hope that you'll get the pup that's just for you and I'm looking forward to hearing about your chosen one.

    Thank you thank you for the great advice and direction toward OFFA! I actually researched that information somewhat before I went to visit, then asked to make sure what was on the site was true from Kyle and Steve's mouths! Everything checked out so far with them–no health issues whatsoever :) So exciting! Blah, this will be the longest 4 months of my life, methinks!

    Thanks! I am trying to get ahold of the people I got her from but I lost their phone number…. She was from a farm way up north. They said the dad had wondered over to their house, and they don't know who's dog it was. The son saw it I guess and said it looked like a small pitbull, but I don't think he knew for sure. I really think she's 1/2 basenji.

    Thank you so much for the warm welcome words at the Forum! I was very inspirit by my friend Steve, and think about my new puppy basenji. Although I read that basenjii is not for everybody dog, and it may be challenging however I seriously want to find my own Besenjii friend and to give him the name Kovu in honor of my friend's dog.     A couple thoughts to welcome baseni_fan to our pack: Hold on… it's gonna be the wildest ride you have ever been on! Think of it like parenthood: you can read all the books and listen to all the sage advice... but nothing can really prepare for the real thing! Older dogs bond fantastically.. our Rock was over 3 when he came to our home... and our lives were never the same. In a very short time, he became very loyal and bonded to our pack. Each dog is different. I truly think they choose us. Enjoy the hunt! This is a fantastic breed... but be prepared. They can also be the most infuriating. grin I think that is half the fun. I love having a dog that makes me think. Best of luck to you and your future pup (be it old or young)! Welcome to the crazy (dog)house!

    @Rocketdog: Hi all, Lurked around here for a couple of weeks, but now I'm joined and posting because I get the feeling that my newest addition to the family is part-Basenji. He's our third dog, but first possible basenji. Previously we had a border collie/labrador cross while I was growing up, and more recently a purebred Weimaraner who sadly had to be put to sleep in 2005 after suffering brain damage following a very sudden and unexpected series of seizures. Meet Rocky, or 'Rocket' as he's properly known. He was named for his ability to jump vertically and launch himself around the garden in a mad run going after anything that moves. [image: t9678z] [image: t9678z] [image: t9678z] Anyway! We adopted him from the local RSPCA shelter at 9 weeks of age. The shelter took in the pregnant bitch and all the pups were born there, no one ever knew what the father was or even looked like. The mother is black and white, and believed to be some kind of Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross (plausible from the picture they showed us of her, and Rocky seems to have a fairly wide face, afterall). The shelter were at a bit of a loss as to what to describe the puppies as, so they were just called 'terrier crosses'. The rest of the litter were either the same pattern/colouring as Rocky, same pattern in black and white, or mostly brown with black noses and the odd patch of white. We believe he is part Basenji. His colouring seems spot on (right down to the black nose and white-tipped tail), along with those ears (which everyone comments on when we meet people out walking!), his curled tail (which I sadly haven't got a picture of yet), and his voice. Probably shouldn't forget to mention that he is a massive handful, and I've never known such a wilful and downright cheeky dog in all my life :) Wouldn't change him for the world, though, he's a great personality. He is a very vocal boy, he makes the most bizarre noises, it was so weird the first time he sang to us - we never expected a dog to make that kind of sound! It was the singing that prompted me to read up on Basenjis, as I had heard in the past that they are renowned for 'yodelling'. He also does a really funny noise I can only describe as 'grumbling' and I've got him sort-of trained to say 'blah blah blah' back at me, and, if he's in a cheeky mood and being told off, he'll yell 'No!' right back at us :) I've poked around and listened to various sound samples and it's so strange, he does sound like a younger version of the recorded dogs! …and yes, that is a cat's bell on his collar. He loves nothing more than to disappear into the bushes in our garden trying to chase birds and squirrels. The bell scares them off and helps us find him :) So, what do you think? I'd love to hear some opinions from basenji owners who think, from the photos and my description, that he's really got some of that in him. dnjfkgnksghs,f,lkjftgkhfncsmil
