• I just noticed that my 12-year-old has a loose tooth (the small tooth just behind the longer cuspid). He seems fine, not in any pain, all activities are normal (eating, drinking, sleeping, etc.) Should I do anything? Will it fall out on its own?

  • Lori, your vet needs to see your dog. They need yearly dental checks and cleaning. A loose tooth could be injury, but could also be infection which can cause organ issues including heart and kidney.

  • If the tooth is loose, it can be easily removed during the dental cleaning. If it is infected, an antibiotic will be given before the cleaning.

He's a boy. :) And he's neutered as of three weeks ago. He's only about 10 months old.

I certainly have to be more careful in selecting his treats because I dont think they mix well when given for variety.. I have tried the Instinct treat bones which are venison and those are "iffy", then I use soft baked treats for training. But on any given day its normal for him to get a treat based with venison, another cheddar cheese and liver ( I cant imagine that to help a lot but he gets bored with only one treat and that leads to motivational issues) Thanks for the info :)

@Patty: It's good to hear that Nilo is now officially 'cured'. I agree with you about antibiotics but sometimes they are the only way to hit a disease.. Thank you Patty, it was a relief! :)

@Kananga: Why is it when dogs feel better they feel the need to be more mischievous than usual? First really glad they found out what is wrong. For the above, when we got Cara she was a little sick. Once she felt better all hell broke loose. My daughter said "Can't we make her sick again?" LOL.

It does not matter what tooth it is. The fact is in the Basenji standard, the teeth are to be a scissors bite. If the tooth is NOT there, it will not be part of the bite that is being looked at anyways. If the dog is getting consistently last in his class, I would have to speculate that are far more serious faults than a missing tooth. And I would not consider one missing tooth to be as serious as a totally undershot or wry bite. Of course, this is only my opinion as breeder, exhibitor and a judge.
