FL-Land O'Lakes-PB Male Red & White Basenji-In Shelter

Basenji Rescue
  • This is the second Basenji in this shelter this year. The shelter is one county north of Tampa. I have not contacted the shelter to see if he is still available. I have not contacted BRAT either.

Would anyone know where these Bs are coming from especially in this county? Is there a breeder in the area?

    Here is his Petfinder page:

  • I sent the url to BRAT just now. I was called yesterday about a transport for a basenji in a Pasco County shelter, but before he could be pulled, someone had adopted him. He was still there waiting for neuter, but theoretically has been adopted. Not sure if this is the same dog but sounds like it.

It is difficult to give up a dog one has had for over 4 years! I lived in an apt. in Houston and I know that unless you walk the dog frequently or have it go to doggy day care and dog parks, the dog will not get enough exercise. Jennifer

I didn't mean to imply anything negative about BRAT. I think they do amazing work. I was just saying that, according to the shelter, BRAT wasn't going to be able to take the mixed puppy. I understand why they can't; it's just so sad to think of all those homeless little guys. He looks more like a terrier mix to me, but he's a cutie whatever he is, and I hope he finds a wonderful home. Fingers crossed for Mama B, too. I think a curly haired Basenji would be adorable!

I am glad this boy is going to BRAT! I hope he is still socialized even after being kenneled that long. I do not understand why non specific breed rescues take in dogs and then leave them kenneled for months! I understand temporary kenneling until one can find a foster home but for months. I have read about this happening too many times and I did not realize how often this occurs. I monitor the Urgent Part 2-Urgent Death Row Dogs Facebook page which monitors the NYCACC shelters and I have seen dogs posted on its site where a dog has been rescued from the shelter and then sits in a kennel for months. I know people want to save dogs but it is expensive for kenneling and this is how rescues become hoarders! There is also an all breed rescue group in IN that solicits funds to pay for boarding. I found the same dog on Petango.com this morning… here is the link: http://www.petango.com/Adopt/Dog-Basenji-14601979 The information states, Benny was surrendered to us and is a bit timid at first, but once she warms up she will love you. She is very attentive to herself most of the time, but she is extremely treat motivated and takes them politely. We think she'd be a great companion for a patient and caring family that would take time to work with her. Call 563-582-6766 to speak to an adoption representative at Dubuque Regional Humane Society I hope Mr/Miss Benny is adopted soon!
