  • @agilebasenji:

yea, I figured that, but "elf meat" had me giggling all day.
    so thanks. :p

    X 2 ;)…

Sorry I couldnt help myself !!!

  • @basilboy7:

My puppy is a chewaholic! I need some ideas for toys that will keep him occupied and away from my bedding, clothes, shoes and furniture! He has a squeaky shoe, a squeaky no stuffing raccoon, a blue gel like "bone" with rope on either end, a small stuffed giraffe, a larger stuffed hippo, a small ball, a kong (that he's never touched… even with peanut butter in it), teething rings (I think they're too hard), two rope toys and a plastic/rope toy for tug o' wars (he hasn't touched). Am I missing any really great toys that will keep him occupied? Any ideas? Even if it's a homemade toy, any ideas would be great... thanks!

Do take the stuffed toys, the gel filled toy, the squeaky shoe, anything plastic, and GET RID OF THEM!!!! If he is a chewaholic like you say, then the plastic will get swallowed, the fur will be chewed off and swallowed, the stuffing may eventually end up in the gut, and you too can spend $$$ at the Vet's office and guilt to boot! I paid the price-believe me. When dogs try and get rid of it and spit up, some gastric juices can be inhaled, Uzie now has pneumonia, and a fever of 104 as of this morning's vet visit-third in 10 days…......Bully sticks as MacPack suggested, PreenPet has a good website for chew things that only natural ingredients in them, not made in China.....
    Please consider safer toys!

  • I find 3 ft bully sticks at PetSmart for about $13, we cut them into 3 12 inch lengths. When we had 3 younger dogs I ordered 'wholesale/bulk' on line, odorfree free-range 12 inch bullys, worked out to under $3 each but I had to spend over $100 at one time. Of course, I always had a new bully handy when I needed them!

  • With all this talk about elf, er, elk meat, is it time for everyone to re-read the (yes, true) story of Dogs in Elk??? If you have never read this old 'chat list' discussion, be sure and empty your bladder first.

@Rocky1: Basenjis chew, this s a fact of life. It might sound like a crazy thing to do,but I bite my pups back. It teaches them that I'M THE BOSS ! It has worked for me for the almost 36 years that I've lived with the little beastys. You can call me crazy,or wrong I don't care Works for me,and my dogs all respect me,and love me. Kathryn Wow, Kathryn - that's funny! I'm sure you just nibble a little. Their feet smell like Tostitos, so just wondering -does the rest of the dog taste like a snack??? LOL

My red & white grew out of chewing up stuff when he was about 4. He had mastered unzipping the couch cushions and destuffing them! It was his duty to destuff any couch with a zipper! My female will be 8 next month and she (I'm afraid) will never grow out of destuffing/chewing! Small hole in a comforter, no problem, let's make it bigger and destuff it so the room looks like snow! Toilet paper, hanging on the toilet paper dispenser? Never in my house! It only lasts 2 minutes and then it is set on a path of distruction…down the hall....in the living room.....in the bathroom.....on the bed..... Unfortunately, she is teaching the toilet paper destruction to my almost 3 year old rescue. But he doesn't shred, he litteraly eats anything he is destroying. We have had to be extra dilligent to keep chew dangers out of his way. He is tiny for a male (20 lbs) and we don't want him to ingest something and not be able to pass it. I echo everyone else's statements. It's like baby-proofing your house, except it's basenji-proofing! And when you catch the chewing something they aren't supposed to have, scold them and give them one of their own toys. These are intellegent dogs, they get it....after a while!

I am finding out quickly that if things are too quiet I better go find Bella. Most of the time she is asleep but there are those times that my tennis shoes or sandals are now becoming just chew toys. Upsetting but funny too. Kind of like my 2 year old grandson's antics.

I use "cow knuckles" from the butcher, these keep them amused for a couple of hours. You need to examine their poop though. Some basenjis will get the trots. If this occurs- bad idea. My youngest will gather all of them up and hide them in my bed. Icky. My first Basenji would hoard and bury them. Amusing. She would have one out and if the other 2 took it, she would simply go dig a fresh one up. The grab bag at second hand stores have stuffed animals. This kept my first 2 amused. They would eviserate them. I had one of those "magic cubes" that you stuff treats in and when it knocked about the treats fall out. That lasted about 2 weeks. They figured out that if they broke it all the treats came out. One of those big yoga balls with peanut butter smeared on it kept 2 of my 3 amused for a couple hours. I know this is an old thread, but it seems to be what we are experiencing…so rather than start a new one, I thought building on an old one would be best. We adopted a brother/sister pair of 5 month old Bs. They do well with other dogs, rarely nip at other dogs (unless they are overly excited and the other dog is a little too friendly - nothing serious so far), but my goodness do they roughhouse with each other. They will start the B-500 while taking them for a walk, and wrestle and tackle, nibble, grab each other by the throat, ear, leg, etc. Sometimes there's noise, sometimes not, lots of legs flying everywhere as they wrestle each other to the ground. By what I've read so far using the search feature, this seems pretty normal B behavior. But occasionally we fear someone's going to call the police and tell them we have a dog fighting ring going! Luckily for us it's only with each other that they wrestle. Other dogs don't interest them except to prove they can run faster. So the $64,000 question is...should we try to train this out of them, or do we just need to learn to live with it - as long as they keep it to themselves and don't involve other dogs. Many thanks!

@Capt_Jack_our_Basenji: see and this is why im worried about poor baby Aiden's stuffed toys when hes born, Jacks going to DESTROY them if he gets the chance!!! Ethan has stuffed toys, but they must stay in his room. His door is kept closed…and as soon as it is open, a dog usually finds its way in there. We try to keep the stuffed toys up, in case they do get in his room. We have taught all the dogs "leave it"; but honestly it is only reliable when we are there to stop them. Anything they find when we aren't watching is pretty much fair game. When kids are grown up enough that they don't put the toys in their mouths you can douse them with bitter apple...
