Easter Egg Hunt

Show Off Your Dog
  • Fortunately the dog park was fairly empty today! I bought some plastic Easter eggs and put a square of Solid Gold Beef jerky in each egg (they open easily with a bite or paw swat). We only had 8 basenjis there today so while everyone else went for a walk, I hid 18 Easter Eggs around trees and under dried leaves. When they got back it wasn't long before their noses found the eggs. It was really cute, some just rolled the eggs around, some picked them up and put them down, finally one discovered that a gentle 'bite' released the treat. Eddie was very proficient at the paw swat, which also opened them. No one argued over the treats, they hunted for a few minutes and when all were gone, they knew it.
Normally bringing treats to the park is a BAD IDEA, but no other dogs were in our area today, and the Basenji pack had a bit of fun!

  • Drat, my photos didn't attach, I'll keep trying!

  • That sounds like so much fun!

  • Sounds like a fun time…. would love to see the pics!

  • Do keep trying to post the pics, MacPack - the pictures of the egg hunt should be quite cute - all the pups, including my girls loved it and we all thank you so much for bringing the eggs!

  • What a great idea, glad they all had fun

I just KNEW he wasn't a thoroughbred after that. Maybe some DNA alterations? Part fish?

@sanjibasenji I guess because I come from a farming community which also hunts, I have known the term since forever and yes, my Chezz and her daughter Trouble worked in tandem, nose to the ground, in patterns, mostly kind of oblongs. They taught themselves to quarter the ground when hunting and I recognised it as soon as it happened - many times over their long lives. That is a very interesting article and much of it pertains to training any dog, not just a hunter.

@tanza: Vickie Perrine can tell you that her Basenji "often" got the "Ebunny"….. My DH is familiar with me yelling "You need to perform a funeral!!!" squeamish readers should stop reading right now The first rabbit Zest! caught (and not quite dead) she brought to me. The second rabbit (dead) she also brought to me. Somewhere around the 3rd or 4th rabbit she stopped bringing me her treasures because (in her mind) I was a class A ungreatful weenie. (Uhm, she may have a point.) We have lots of stupid rabbits around here. I don't know if they confuse Digital the brindlewonderkid who, at almost 16, doesn't run very fast with Z or what. I wish the redtailed hawk would move back into the area to help control the population. (beats the heck out of having the coyotes)

Those are great videos! Ebony looks very content to just chill and let Hope do all the work. Hope lets out a huge yawn at the end, like saying "aww.. I am giving up". Then Ebony pounces as if to say "look, I could have done that too, but I just chose not to. But I DID want you to know I could have done it". :) You have two lovely b's!

Fiji's favourite past time in the winter is hunting mice in the house! When it is very cold in the winter they move in (under the floor generally), this involves pulling up the carpets, the least little noise and she is racing around like a mad thing, she has never caught one yet.
