Cicular skin rash

    hello,
    my husband and i have had our Burma for 2 years now and never new what kind of dog she was, we called her our abadong dog :p
    today some people asked us if she was basenji and i looked into it and she fits everything!! except her tail is straight and she barks/howls…
    however...
    she has had this skin issue for about a year now, it is circle red patches on her skin, mainly on her belly and under arms... we took her to the vet last summer and they gave us some antibiotics which we completed and the patches went away only to return a few months later... :(
    i have tried using healthy coat dog food and putting apple cider vinegar in her water and using oatmeal shampoo... nothing helps them. oh and she has dandruff around her butt top of tail area.
    anyone know about this or have any recommendations?

    I would try tea tree oil. Medjai had a rash for awhile and that is the only thing that fixed it, and I tried everything.

    Did they do a skin scraping for mites? And what food are you feeding? Does it have corn in it? Many dogs have food allergies to many grains, corn being a big one.

    I used a fish oil vitamin that I punctured and rubbed directly on red tummies on 2 Bs and it seems to work. i also just bought Funky Dog Balm on a BRAT member's recommendation, all organic, and it really worked well. If not mites, these might help. My Cory was allergic to lamb & rice, both broke him out big time. We now feed Call of the Wild Venison & Bison which we purchase at TSC, Tractor Supply Co. Keep away from corn, wheat grains as much as possible. Dawn

    Be careful about tree tree oil… it was wildly popular til they found many issues and reactions to it.

    Common herbs that are potentially dangerous for use in animals

    Pennyroyal (very toxic to dogs and cats)
    White Willow bark (salicylates may be toxic to cats)
    Garlic (Heinz body anemia)
    Tea Tree oil (VERY toxic to cats and small dogs)
    Ma Huang (cats have idiosyncratic reactions)
    Comfrey (cause liver damage)
    Hops (in greyhounds

    If the antibiotics cleared it up, then it almost has to be bacteria related or it would not have cleared up. BUT could be allergy start and then bacterial developement.

    If you can, go to a university vet school for exam so they can help look at diet and other issues, as well as skin scraping etc.

    they said that the vet did do a skin scraping, i dont recall them saying for mites. she eats beneful healthy radiance dry dog food-we thought that could help her skin stuff…

    You might want to try a better quality food and one without any grains, there are a number of them. And you should check and make sure that she was checked for mites. If you call your Vet they should have it on her records.

    Yeast dermatitis is very common in dogs. Did they do a scrapping of the rash?

    @Hana: She is 10.5 months now so we'll be thinking about transitioning at some point to an adult food. Here's a link to many of the dry foods lots of folks on this list use. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/ IMO, if you can afford the 5 star foods, go for it. Kipawa eats Taste of The Wild Bison formula and loves it! There's no grain or corn or 'meal' in it.

    @FortheLoveofStella: Stella has very short hair, and she is flaky a lot (in more ways than one!!) Do you need a prescription for the omega3 or fish oil? Or can you just the human equivalent at cvs? Human equivalent is fine to use

    @tanza: Could also be a reaction to some kind of bite… here is another thought... when did he have he last round of shots? But in the end, I think I would take a trip to the Vet... could just be a little ear infection going on... they can and do get yeast infections in the ears.. and I have found that puppies for what ever reason get dirty ears... and slight infections. Kobey had one when he was about 4/5 months old... His second round of puppy shots he got on the 7th of this month. His next round isn't until the 6th of March. I am going to call the vet this afternoon & ask them if we should bring him in. His ears do get really dirty with wax buildup. I have actually used a q-tip (he's gotten a little better) & cleaned them almost every other day in the past week because everytime I look down there I see some buildup. Maybe that itself is another sign that something more is wrong. I will check his paws & rear tonight for any signs of an allergy but I examined him a lot last night (after noticing his ears) & didn't see anything else out of the ordinary.

    Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)
