Oakley-Mirror

Basenji Talk

  • I'll have to get a picture but I have a floor mirror that Oakley just can't get enough of. It has been a week and at first he would inch up to it and growl, slowly he gained more confidence to go up to it and try to get "to the other side"…now he will spend hours in front of it just sitting there staring at himself. He can't pass up a mirror!

Also, today was his first B500 with me, it came about because of the mirror...apparently today he thought it was funny

  • My son's Sidhe, gets into my makeup chair and then taps my mirror, which lights with finger touch, and sits there and enjoys how very pretty she is.

:) Clever girl! She should be elevated to supermodel status.

Isn't the B500 wonderful! After hearing about it for a year, I was anxiously awaiting Kipawa doing it. It was a joy for us experiencing his first one. So glad you enjoyed yours!

  • When Liyah was a pup she would see her reflection in our stereo cabinet door. She would yodel to it and bring her toys and play bow, etc. She thought her reflection was a little friend. It was the cutest thing - and she would always try to play with her "friend" when the 2 adults basenjis had enough of her and wouldn't play with her.

So funny..Pippin can't walk past my big new shiny stove without prancing and running up to it and look at himself in the reflection..so funny..

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

Spencer had one of his anal glands impacted when he was just under a year old, and ever since, I keep an eye out for swelling, scooting, licking or tail biting. It's usually obvious when he's having issues. Except… I took him to the vet last week because I thought he might have an eye infection. I always have his anals expressed while I'm there and was shocked when the vet tech said he had an infection in one of them. I had seen no signs at all! So now he's on antibiotics for ten days, then back we go for a re-check. Glad to hear Oakley is doing well. He's a handsome boy!

Hello Chealsie508, First off, very lovely pics. I am no basenji expert, but have come to the realization that Bs can at times be a bit disobedient as far as listening to commands go. Me and my B are currently in obedience class and she is towards the bottom of the class (during class…but much better at home)! I would try and redirect Oakley when he wants to nip with giving him an appropriate toy for that activity...be consistent. Hormones could be a factor and I agree he is in his terrible 2s and testing you and your limits, perhaps trying to be the dominant pack leader. He may just be playing and doesn't realize he is hurting you...pull away and say OWWW real loud every time. With licking the tops of soda cans, I am a little lost there since I have not witnessed such behavior or at least not with such focus...I know it sounds easy but also try and redirect the activity with something else Oakley may like...when he goes for the can tell him to sit, praise him "good sit" and treat, then walk away. Hope you find this helpful.
