Basenji Talk in Scotland?

Basenji Talk

  • This is aimed at all the Scottish/North of England folks on here. I am thinking about organising an informal breed talk on the Basenji to help all of us relatively new basenji folk get a greater understanding of type etc. Lets face it apart from Basi and her mum we are all relative beginners with this breed. Irene Horner (Bokoto) has agreed to do an informal talk, so i just want to check interest and try to arrange a date possibly in November?

Venue would likely be Lanark or Larkhall - less than an hour from Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling/Carlisle - so we can hopefully attract some folk from over the border too.

Could any interested please pvt message me, with preferred times/dates i.e. would an evening during week be perferable to a saturday or sunday?

    cheers

    Scott

  • Any chance you guys could video tape it and post it on YouTube so that those of us in the US could see it after?

  • Update on this. The original idea was to organise a couple of breed talks on various hounds - it looks like this is going to be the format (think it will be Basenji and Saluki) which will ensure we will get most people at it. It now also looks like it will be early next year - between Crufts and Hound Show of Scotland. I cant think of any basenji show that could clash with it - but if anyone does, let me know. I think it is still Irene Horner doing the talk - i will update with venue/dates etc as and when available.

Renault1 - am not sure if it would be something we could video tape - the main thing at these talks is the they are kept informal and people dont feel scared to ask questions - I think knowing they were being filmed might make some people hold back and maybe not get as much out of the day as they should.

That would certainly suit me better as will hopefully be back in Scotland then. Have seen a house that we are interested in, just have to hope it is still on the market around the 21st Oct as can't get back before then as going to Cyprus to see the in-laws:rolleyes:

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).
