Podengo pups at 8 weeks

  • Great video!!!

Our dogs immediatly came to us, when you start "calling" them :D

  • Glad I could help with their training! On another note - I just heard from the Portuguese Kennel Club and in addition to being in the registry maintained by the Medio/Grande Club and the AKC FSS - since both the parents are FCI and registered in Portugal - I can register the litter there too.

So that gives some options should I want to show in Mexico while waiting for AKC to put us in MISC.

  • What a lovely video. Haven't they grown well? Mum looks as though she's enjoying them.

  • Of course she is enjoying them - I'm doing all the work LOL

Matter of fact - I composed this little ditty one day - hope you know the tune to the Hokey Pokey

I have been very busy - so hum along because "what if the hokey pokey is what it's all about"!

    You put the puppies in
    you put the puppies out
you put the puppies in and you chase them all about

You get the pooper scooper and you turn yourself around
    That's what it's all about…..

You fill the food dish here
    you fill the water there
    you wash the bedding now
and they've eaten all their chow

You get the pooper scooper and you turn yourself around
That's how I spend my time.

You buy more dog food here
you buy some pee pads there
You buy more dog food here
Oh my will it ever end

You get the pooper scooper and you turn yourself around
That's what I do all day!

I'm sure if I had time I could write some more - but I think you get the idea what I've been doing.

  • LOL… so very true.... gggg

  • Love your new song. I think this such be attched to every puppy. Just to give people a heards up. Pups are still beautiful and really growing.

    Rita Jean

  • Well Rita Jean - it's just a little old 7 hour drive to you if you need one at your house :)

  • Diana I would have been closer if I still lived in Iowa.

What would Jaycee do? I cannot run that fast any more I can just see a puppy and Jaycee chasing and playing together. I know when I held that little puppy it stole my heart.

    Rita Jean

  • Diane they are truly beautiful. Hanna did great. How many are you keeping? I wish I could fit one more dog in…but my hubby is already at his limit..whatever that means..and I real like to foster for Brat.

  • I love the ditty - have I got your permission to put it in our club mag?

  • Please do - this references BTW a litter of 11 - Portuguese Podengo Grande Smooth puppies. The first in the United States. Can't imagine why I'm singing and making up songs - they are a lot of work!

If it would provide someone amusement - please reprint away just give me credit: Diana McCarty

Podengo temperament - first as I said before they have a softer temperament than basenjis - harsh corrections result in a dog that will melt into the ground. The Medio size (keeping in mind I do not live with this size) needs to be kept busy - they are active and appear to do well when there is some pretty physical exercise and brain activity for them. Lure coursing, agility, even rally can keep them happy and focused. A couple of foks are going to try them at fly ball. All sizes like to hunt and must always be behind a fence or on a leash. I find that the Grande (BIGS) are a bit more laid back. They love to run, they will catch bunnies and birds on the fly and in Portugal they run down boar and stag. Their preference appears to be investigating their enviroment for any changes and sleeping on the couch. If you think of primitive hounds of the Mediteranian Basin - you get what a Podengo looks like and how they are. Similar to Ibizan, Pharoh Hound, Cirneci, basenjis etc. The little size - pequeno is a breed apart - it is smaller 8-12 inches and is not a bred down big it is longer than tall and is a rabbit hunter in thick brush. @dmcarty: I typically only breed when I have some good home lined up as well. But when I started to investigate the breed - there were 19 Podengo Grande Smooth registered in the world. So I started the project to see what we in the US could do to increase the numbers and to motivate those breeders in Portugal to register their dogs. We are starting to see some success and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have 11 puppies. I do have some homes and some will go to different parts of the US for breeders of other size Podengo to show off, I have a few that are staying by me and a friend has offered to take in a couple to continue socializing when I have to go back to school in the fall. Once they get their shots and I can get them out and about - I think I will see some interest. My good friend Wendy (Harehill Hounds) has been very helpful in building some interest in the Beezer community as well. It really sounds that you know what you are doing, so everything will turn out fine , I am sure about that! meanwhile you can show us loads of pictures of the bunch :D

oops Robin forgot to answer your question - she is eligible in FSS AKC for Companion events - I plan on starting with Rally - I may do some lure events just the baby try it out ones because she is not old enough until November and we don't have much lure coursing in Minnesota in November. Plus I have to say that going to lure coursing without having John Siverson there would feel a little strange - I have a trainer who is very interested in agility with her and would actually show her in agility for me - which given my propensity for falling down might not be bad.
