New rescue Rocky from MN wags his tail?

Behavioral Issues
  • I'm not sure where to post this, but the newly rescued Basenji, Rocky, wags his tail and has a little tiny bark and he yodels. Next to other Basenjis, he looks all Basenji, but his coat is not solid color but spotted brindle and white. Could he be a Jack Russell/Basenji mix? Rocky's personality is very sweet, he wants to please, learns commands quickly, he almost bounces when he jumps, and he's not snarky like my girls. Everything about him but his marking and tail wagging is Basenji.

My youngest female Basenji rescue barks every so often as she imitates her best friend, my terrier mix.

  • All 3 of mine wag their tails. Ruby and Brando both bark - Brando more than Ru.

  • I am not sure what you are describing about his color. Can you post some pictures.

As for the tail wagging, my girls all wag their tail. We even joke that the reason Sophie only has a single curl to her tail is because she "wagged that curl right out of her tail." Basenjis can give a "warning bark", Rally will boof at the vacuum cleaner, her arch-nemesis.

  • Otis wags his tail as well ever so slightly, like a little cinnamon roll , Bana, our foster, does it very much back and forth, looks like her little tail is about to fly off, she also does this little bark, more like a quick breath of air pushed out fast..if that makes sense, and only of she is playing with my barking dogs, never with Otis..

    Pictures, we need pictures..

  • Good to know that Bs wag their tails. My girls don't - they are too crabby to make me think they like something! Altho, the girls have been so cuddly since Rocky showed up!! Rocky took a nap with "us" this afternoon; you should have seen the Basenji girls expressions when they saw him on "our" bed!

I will post some pictures of Rocky. RitaJean is sure Rocky isn't mixed. Her little girl and Rocky look all Basenji.

If a tri and brindle are mixed, what would be the resulting coat color?

  • I think if a tri and brindle is mixed the color would be called trindle..but I am sure if I am wrong somebody else with more experience will chime in and help.
Either way he sounds adorable, and yes pictures are imperative…

  • Rocky is that same really dark red like Jaycee. I have to get pictures on here see Rocky. Rocky is very adorable.

    Rita Jean

  • Please post the picture(s) you have of Rocky and your little darling, too.
Rocky is such a little sweetie.

  • Nulla wags her tail when she is VERY excited.

  • Cody wags his tail when he's extremely excited, like if there is a cat outside or in the neighbors' yard, when he's about to pounce on Moe, or when I come home from work (not only am I home, but I work in a pasta/seafood restaurant, so he thinks I smell yummy). He doesn't bark though.

@Muro-Pads Rule of thumb, best to do opposites... not always a hard/fast rule, but 90% of the time. As they say "it works till it doesn't"

@Basenji420: We just recently got our new bundle of joy Nala… 8 weeks old. Shes such a sweet heart.... Loves to snuggle up to you and keep warm....plays around and is so much fun. We are having a few i say minor problems. First off... She keeps pooping everywhere in the house. When we take her out to eliminate she only goes to pee. She seems to only poop in the house in the corners of rooms. She pooped outside this morning and we gave her praise and a treat. The breeder had a "kitty litter" type thing in the corner which is why she still thinks she should pee in corners i believe. She keeps nipping at us even though she is a puppy. She takes it too far. We have been consistant with when she does nip or try to bite us we yell out like if it hurt tell her no and even stop playing at that moment and ignore her for a while... She stops for a min but then is back at it again or just keeps doing it right after. She hates the leash...we got her a collar nothing special and we just even tried to put it around her neck and she just keeps scratcing at it...... She always pulls away and resist to even getting use to it. We tried giving her treats and sniffing it to get use to it but to no avail. Any help would be great as we do not want to have to deal with issues that can be corrected to get worse in the future. Thanks, MM Ok well yes we spoke to the breeder and she gave some tips about it. THey didnt use a collar on her before we got her She is also doing much better with going outside and letting us know. GUess it just takes time. I guess i just thought she needed to be walked. She has so much energy sometimes after a good nap but we are not walking her as of yet. I did not use a kitty litter cause i did not want her to get use to this. Why use a kitty litter if we dont plan on using it. THe nipping is still happening but i guess we cant really do much we just stuff a toy in her mouth and tell her chew so she knows to chew/nip on her toys. Anyone have any tips on crate training their basenji.. She absoulutely hates the crate in the day..unless she is super tired and will nap on us then we will take her and put her in the crate.. She HATES being away from us and being along. Has no issues sleeping in the crate at night too. Goes in with ease.

My breeder said that if your basenji lays his ears flat backwards when greeting you it's a sign of affection. I see that my 3month old does that to me and she adores me and my boyfriend. Maybe thats your other signal .

Not sure, it could be so many things that a human can not see or smell. But, my terrier would do a low growl every time we drove by our old vet. We changed vets and he stopped but he still knew even 10 years later that he hated that vet. Not sure what happened to him that he hated them so much but he was neutered there!

Lovely photos, so glad your pack is accepting of the "new puppy". I feel that if you just expect basenjis to be good, they will be!

"garlic deters fleas" Also works on my wife. Either everyone has to eat it or no one. Dogs don't seem too fond of garlic breath either, this should be for the foot & kissing thread?
