How much sleep?

    I'm curious how much other folks' Bs sleep. If mine aren't eating or outside on a walk, they are asleep - so that's most of the hours of the day!

    Nemo's favorite hobby is sleeping…sleeping on the bed, on the couch, in the sun outside on the patio, in my lap, etc. I would say he is sleeping anytime he isn't eating or playing with the puppy. The 7 mo puppy, of course, hardly sleeps if she thinks something is going on that she is missing.

    Medjai sleeps as long as I am inactive, but if I'm moving about, he will be about following me and watching me. I'm too lazy and am looking for jobs online, so he is just laying around and spending the whole day sleeping. Oh, except for the 3 hours at the dog park in the morning.

    Pat also sleeps alot - unless he is following me around the house or on a walk! I find it amusing that he seems to have gone into 'teenage' mode and won't get up in the mornings until after we have all eaten breakfast - usually around 8!! He is pretty crafty as he knows that as soon as he gets out of bed in the morning he goes to the garden (and it isn't always sunny out there!) It is the only meal that we can have with Pat in the room and not jumping up at the table!

    Otis has been sleeping a lot too lately, and I never thought about the heat..because we are in right, but that is probably it. You can't barely be out, with heat indexes around 108-110 degrees..so we have B-500 inside instead and rolling balls so they can chase them and all…yesterday Otis and Bana found something real interesting to chase though..regardless of how hot it was otside. One of our 16 week old chickens had flown over their fence into the backyard and oooh my g-d did they chase that stupid chicken. Otis finally got a hold of it and would not let go over her. I had to end up prying his mouth apart to get her, she was Ok, frazzled but Ok, Otis and Bana were very excited and now know how good it feels to have prey in their mouths..after that they slept like dead ones..

    Our boys (ant the Ibizan too) are happy to be asleep but not that much :D hahaha
    Without their nightsleep (between 23.00 and 06.00) they sleep a hour or 3..

    When we are at work, we're home and they are busy looking outside the window (the view changes every second on a ship) they are most of the time lying lazy looking out of the windows.

    Buana sleeps a bit more then Chafuko and Hailey.
    Chafuko and Hailey are the "young" ones, they keep playing together all day long..

    When we're not home, the are in their crate and never longer allone for about 4 hours.
    And then they all sleep.. (I THINK :D)

    Jaycee up at about 7:30 A.M. Go potty and she eats and plays goes potty taking nap by 9:00 A.M.
    Get up about 11:00 A.M. or so and go potty play have lunch back to sleep by 1:15 P.M.
    Get's back up about 4:00 P.M. and we are up for play, food, walks everything until bedtime after that. Bed some were from 9:30 to 10:00 P.M.

    My 7 month old female sleeps from about 8:30 at night to about 6:30 in the morning, and takes a few short naps here and there during the day when I am online or otherwise sedentary - but if I am moving about, or if she hears noises outside to investigate out the windows, she's up and active.

    When it's hot here Buddy will tire out easier. Back in the 90's I used to take my last 2 Basenjis to this huge field where they would chase down jack rabbits and kill them. I stopped taking them out there because they were getting too many.

    Akeyla sleeps through the night from 11:00pm-8:00am, then outside to potty and breakfast. It's not much longer after that that she is in the morning sun sleeping until about 12, then a walk and back to sleep until about 2. And the rest of the day she is up until after she eats dinner. (of course we have a few potty breaks in there)

    Ellie is fine 99% if the time, but very occasionally (every couple of months) if she's asleep on someone on the sofa and they move slightly she lets out a very aggressive snarl/snap as described in the article. She then wakes up and looks very confused. It feels like she has no control over it and I wonder if it's when she's in a specific stage of sleep. Interestingly she has never done this in our bed at night. We have been training her the "off command" which is rewarded with a treat and that now works well even if she's asleep - she jumps straight off knowing there's a piece of chicken coming her way afterwards!

    I am not up to date on current rabies vaccines for dogs, but I know that in the past there was more than one formulation, as my next door neighbour's dog had an anaphylactic reaction when vaccinated and the vet made a note to use a different formulation for the next annual shot. In future the dog had no difficulties. There are known side effects to most vaccines. Aggression is not one I am familiar with, however, with rabies vaccination in countries that require it there isn't much choice. It would not be my first thought with an 18 month old dog showing aggression. Especially a Basenji objecting to being moved from a comfortable place.

    I don't know if you feed your dog before you walk him, but if you don't, you might find walking him first early morning, after waking up will take care of this issue. My boy basenji won't even eat until he has "done" his business. Same in the afternoon. Walks will empty them and make them hungery.

    @Chealsie508: When he wants to play he bites too hard and also tries to run and nip at your bum or arm.. I always say no and off the couch he goes but it's a game to him, he tries repeatedly to get back up and aims for my hands… All in play but still, he will even think nothing of aiming for your face if that's right near him. Last night I had two people over and the entire time he kept biting their hands and lunging to play, I told him no, I held his mouth, he went in his crate... I'd like for him to learn to have a soft mouth and I'd like to have company over without them being play mauled. I should note that it's poor socialization on my part specifically that I rarely have people over my apartment so I don't honk Oakley knows how to handle people being in his house... Ok, from what you described he needs 1) you to initiate the play. he should not initiate it on his terms and be in control. Control his environment by being the one to play. Certain times of day, you will know the times because it will be when it is at your convenience and can spend quality time etc. If he tries to play, leave the room, don't even say "no", just ignore. When you ignore the 'bad' behavior and only give attention when it is 'good', the theory is -is that it should become extinct. 2) impulse control yes. Do so by the ignore and leave the room exercise, REDIRECT his energy with a sit-stay series or puppy push ups: sit-down-sit-down-treat! and on it goes…..stay-increase distance-COME! treat! FUN STUFF!!!! 3)have toy will travel...have one somewhere all the time, esp when you have guests. Have them throw it before the nip, and voila! humans in control. I know it is not as easy as writing this, but I have redirected some growlies toward the older dogs in the 'pack' or biting the doggy beds, or the new couch I have(or rug...) and it works! Patience, persistence, consistency are the keys....

    We've been leaving the crate door open. The worst thing he has done is during the night, he goes to the other dog's pillow, plops down, and the other poor dog gives up and moves somewhere else. We haven't heard a peep out of either of them all night, so we can sleep. Only problem is stepping on them if you don't know where they are! Right now we have two visiting dogs for a month - big female yellow (clueless) lab and a big blonde retriever mix. Buster thinks he can go up and nip their necks and he growls and snaps at them. I know I've read about this type of behavior on the other discussion boards. The thing is, for the first few days, they were getting along and playing. Now, Buster is getting a little more aggressive. Is this just part of the Basenji charm?:confused:

    Oh, the other thing I wanted to mention was that Lexi will go forever if she has woods– like squirrels to chase. Here in DC, we have graveled-treeless dog parks that are small. Lexi does not like those at all. It's too boring.
