Puppy teeth

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Has anyone's puppy still got baby teeth at 24 weeks old?

Poppy still has one baby canine wedged firmly in behind the adult one.

How long should I leave this?

    Steve

  • Hi.
Mody is over 5 month now and she has the same, it is normal, main fact is, that she has the adult one, the baby canin teeth will leave for sure…It is very individual -the time of loosing baby teeth, really don?t worry about this, when she is just 6 months old. And does she have all adult teeth except this one double?

  • Hi Petra,

Thanks for the reply and reassurance. She has does have all her adult teeth and she lost the other double about a week ago.

    Steve.

  • Hi Steve

I wouldn't worry about it yet, just keep an eye on the adult tooth and check it's coming through in the right position. Keiko still had hers at 5 1/2 months, they were rigid one day and gone the next.

  • I am not sure how many baby teeth Jaycee has left but I do know we have found several of her teeth. Kind of funny hear crunch and she would drop a tooth.

But you know me I always worry! It will be something else next week!

  • I've just had a look and noticed that Dora (Rocco's sister) has the same thing going on and she's 5 months now. All Rocco's adult teeth are through though.

  • Thanks everyone.

It seems quite common so I am reassured. I will just have to worry about something else!

  • The final tooth is out at 28 weeks old! The day before it seemed to be wedged firmly in place and I was contemplating an expensive trip to the Vets!

She managed to dislodge it after a destructive frenzy of items she stolen from a cupboard while we were out on a short shopping trip. The Items included a roll of kitchen paper, a very large bag of pasta and plastic bags. I think she was protesting about being left on her own for the first time in what we thought was a safe place.

I have posted a picture of the destruction on Noodle’s - You'd think I'd have learned my lesson too!

    Steve.

  • Wow, I am glad she took caer of her tooth by herself…but I saw the mess, wow. It probably ended up cheaper then a vet visit though. Otis lost all his teeth by 5 months, the last to go was his canines, but I thing the reason his were lost fairly early is because he is on BARF diet, meaning lots of bones and chewy meat to tear through..maybe.

  • O yes, it was certainly cheaper than the Vet!!!

@3basenjimom Agree, a vet visit. I have never seen a post on grinding teeth before so it’s very unusual.

Pat.. you know I saw your post and thought HUH? Then reread and saw I TOTALLY missed the itching sentence. No, I'm not tired! :) Agree with Pat, could be fleas, could be other things. I'd flea comb the base and see if you find flea dirt, fleas, scabs etc. If the coat in general is good, and you find nothing combing and bathing doesn't help, rubbing a little anti-itch med into the base and distracting til it dries might help.

@DebraDownSouth: While others here post both husband and wife, they are individual and self-sufficient enough to post in the name of the person who is posting. "We" is a way I suspect to avoid either claiming responsibility. How about putting who is typing? Second, that you failed to grasp a basic is very sad but I'll make it easy for you. (Really, being honest you KNEW why but it was what you could find to try to make a fight)…. I said I have vets as friends to counteract the nonsense that I am attacking vets. Oh wait, I actually said that. Please quit trying to twist things for engagement. So not worth it. In fact, I am going to demonstrate my own advice and ignore trolling posts hence forth. How silly for me to respond when no one else misunderstood and only one person pretended to. Debra, we will never allow anyone to dictate to us how we should post on any forum. In addition, we will not bullied into anything by a comment or statement that someone else makes. We are not of high school age and we don't care for the drama associated with that type of behavior. You are welcome to suspect or make any type of assumption you wish that makes you comfortable. The context of the statement you made is an attempt at pure manipulation. The facts are that this is an internet forum. Like any Internet forum or blog a person or persons have the right to an expectation of privacy. If they wish to disclose information about themselves then it is their choice only. In our view no one has the right to demand anything different. We comprehend the majority of what is posted on this forum. We have no problem asking questions when we don't. We find your sentence that starts with " Second….." is written in a nonsensical way. We think you might have left out a word or two. As far as we understand, adults having intelligent discussion on an internet forum are not looking for a fight. We find it unfortunate that you have that perception. If you feel the need to justify your decisions and behavior, we do not think anyone is stopping you. Now that this is over maybe the discussion can get back on track.

Yes, she's a wonderful lady. Always very helpful, and quick to reply to any concerns I have. If I thought it was an immediate problem I would have contacted her right away, but it sounds like a common phenomenon. Glad to have community feedback.

@Benkura: Puppy teeth are lovely but it is a relief when all the little 'needles' go. :) Ain't that the truth! :D:D
