My Very Clever Girl…

Basenji Talk

  • Just wanted to brag about something Ochre did a few days ago :).

We have 3 crates in our loungeroom, one for Saba, one for Ochre and one for Nosh, our Cattle Dog… Ochres crate is on top of Saba's. A week or so ago, Ochre jumped up on her crate, and scratched the water container, then turned around to look at me, sitting in the chair. (Being the good mother that I am, I had forgotten to leave water out for her and Saba, who were playing together :o). I just stared at her, not really comprehending that she wanted a drink !!! DOH... Because I didnt respond, she did it again, hitting the water container, then turning to look at me... Her very clever Mum, then got the water down for her, which she really appreciated... I was a bit surprised with this behavior.

She repeated this again last night, cos again I had forgotten to leave some water out for them, :o. What I find most amusing about this clever behavior, is, that the little minx took till she was about 7 1/2 months to reliably toilet train :rolleyes:. Having said that, she has just had a couple of accidents again, cos we have had some lovely rain, and of course, "Precious", doent like to get her feet wet... Its just easier and more convenient to go in the house .

    B's, gotta love them !!!

  • Wow! That's very clever of her! I had to LOL at the "the little minx took till she was about 7 1/2 months to reliably toilet train" part :D :D

Tillo hates me for taking him out in the rain, but lucky for me he nevered peed in the house!! He also doesn't want to pee in the garden!! He can hold it for hours and hours…. :D ;)

  • I am sooooooooo looking forward to the time when she can hold it in for hours and hours, I can tell you :D:D:D

  • That story reminds me of something our girl did when she was a pup ( which was 17 years ago ) . Seshie was probably about 6 months old at the time . I was in the Living Room doing something I thought was important and heard a scuffling sound in the kitchen . I ignored it - not always a wise thing for a basenji owner to do . I heard the sound again and called for Seshie , but didn't go check it out . More scuffling . Just as I was about to get up , here she comes trotting into the living room with her water bowl in her mouth . She prances over to the couch , throws the bowl at my feet , sits down and looks up at me like " I believe you are being remiss in your duties Mom.Get with the program " I couldn't believe it !! From that point on , any time we heard the bowls being pushed around we knew we needed to fill the water . How smart are these little boogers ??!!!

  • Mine do something similar. Except for the empty thing. Low or dirty water warrants the same response. Nothing better than mopping up because there was a piece of kibble floating in their otherwise pristine water.

They'll roll in cow feces, but won't eat soggy kibble?

  • Gossy hasn't ever done that with her water bowl but has with her food dish.
When she's hungry she'll nudge it and paw it until she can get it turned over then grabs it and THROWS it at me. :D

Hah. My B loves to throw things at me. :D

  • Smart little girl….....

(sorry I have to say it....it's practically bursting from me....based on an older thread......)

....but can she fix a sump pump:D

  • @snorky998:

    ….but can she fix a sump pump:D

    :D :D Too funny..

  • Ours also nudge their bowls when they want more water. We have 2 bowls with water at all times, one on the first floor and one on the thrid floor. We have a front porch off teh second floor that they love to lie in the sun on and when the weather is right we will put a bowl there as well. Since a couple are on hard tile floors they make a huge racket when they are shoved around. They will even pick them up and move them so they slam down and I think they might break. We have found the bowl several feet away when we did not come in time.

  • OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Here I was thinking I just might have the very smartest B in the world, and it all sounds like its just common B behavior :):):). Bugger…

    snorky 998,

I read that thread, no she cant fix a sump pump, but, Im working on it :D

  • Basenjis will never be able fix a sump pump…. they need opposable digits.

  • Hahahaha!!!!!

  • The way those little feet can grasp and manipulate things, it's almost as if they do have a psuedo thumb (like pandas).:)

Opposable thumbs are often related to species that are considered to have a higher order of thinking. Those of us here that have ever said "How the h*** did the dog(s) do that!!" may secretly think they just hide their thumbs till we're not looking :D.

Higher order of thinking? Who knows. Prankster order of thinking? Absolutely!!

Hello All! Well were in day 6 of her 1st season and things are going really well with the doggie diapers (to my surprise), she wears them without problem…I think perhaps the actual ones designed for dogs may work slightly better or she just doesn't mind. They may have a different shape to them that helps them stay on, the tail hole is in a perfect spot. She is very tired and quite loving. Her "girl parts" got quite big over the past few days and nipples have doubled in size (hope they go back down). Me and my GF can't wait for this to be over! Scarlett was born in September so I guess her mom (Therese and Kevin's Karma...dad was Sober) had to have a similar cycle. Been busy but will try to post Scarlett diaper pics soon!

Heidi might be allergic to penicillin. It might be an idea to contact the breeder and find out about the medical history of Heidi's for-bearers. For a long time after I got Mister Two Dicks, he would throw up for what I though was no reason. I would give him dry food, he would throw up. I would give him canned food, he would throw up. I would give him beef bones, he would throw up. After much complaining to his breeder and others, it suddenly dawned on his breeder that Mister Two Dicks' grandfather was allergic to beef. Ever since, no beef, no throw ups. It could be that Heidi is allergic to something and it is hereditary. Just a thought.

We finally made it home this past Saturday. It was so good to see the girls and they were really excited to have us back as well. We have been spending much quality couch time to make up for our time apart!

hi sorry for the situation!!, but the pit bull was trying to be aggressive !!. and if not , they tent to be very alpha towards other dogs. the owner needs to get help with there pit because it's going to go into aggressive mode and really hurt another animal!. get apple spray and keep it with you!. it might help but once in that mode with a pit bull it's hard to get them out of that mode too!. if you have this happen again try to grab the pitt BY THE SIDE OF THE MOUTH !!. THIS DOES TEND TO HELP THEM LET GO.
