Basenji nose color

  • Does anyone know if the nose has pink on it, if that means it is not a well-bred dog?

Not an indicator of responsible breeding at all. It happens sometimes.

  • Also, if its a puppy it could just be the pigment hasn't come through??

I know in the pictures the breeders sent of Maya's litter, they all were born with pink noses and the pigment started to come through gradually until they were 8 weeks old when it had mostly come through :D

And sometimes the more white in the face the nose might be a lighter or pink color. Some pedigrees carry a "pinky" nose too… not an indication of poor breeding at all... even though we all would prefer the nice black nose. Same goes for light eyes... some lines carry a light eye...

  • Dallas had a little "lightening bolt" of pink across his nose when he was a pup.

He's the one on the left obviously:

However, it has disappeared as he has grown.

  • Lexi used to have a lot of pink on her nose when she was younger. It eventually filled in- maybe after the first year or so? But sometimes when she sleeps… some of it comes back. ;)

  • Also Basenjis get "winter nose" and their nose sometimes lightens up a little in the winter. It doesn't go totally pinkish like a puppy though.

  • Sugar gets the 'winter nose' thing. It does get a pinkish black, but in summer goes straight back to black. All puppies are born with the pink noses and they later fill in. Talker still has a little bit of pink which I expect will fill in.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
