Vacuums = Curious little animals

Basenji Talk
  • I just got a new vacuum, and although Medjai has gotten used to my old vacuum by now, he had absolutely no idea what to do with the new one. Probably because it's a Roomba (robot) but he has to stay in his crate while it cleans for now. I have heard a horror story from a cousin who's dog went to the bathroom in the house, and the roomba drug it all around the house.

I can't figure out how to put a poll in, but I would like to know do your dogs treat the vacuum favorably, or unfavorably.

  • Mine have always attacked the Vacuum…period... never tried a Roomba...gggg

    +1

It's too interesting to avoid like some dogs do. Basenji's have no fear. :D

  • Medjai's biggest problem is the lawn mower. My parents' dog just stays away from it, whereas Medjai tries to attack it, so he isn't allowed out of the house when we're mowing.

  • :eek:My girl, Bella, hates the vacuum!!!

  • Both of mine completely ignore the vacuum, except to look annoyed when we ask them to please get out of the way.

But then, I know that Bryan was remodeling his home when Jazz was born, and I think still when Keoki was born, so they came very used to loud noises and sudden noises and nothing fazes them. When Darren breaks out power tools, they both run to see if he needs help. LOL

    Especially the annoyed look :D

  • Brando ignores the vacuum…Ruby circles away from it and then runs toward it and pounces on it :D...pretty funny, although it takes forever to vacuum a room when she constantly jumps on it.

  • Kona doesn't care about the vacuum, but we have not tried the Roomba with her yet. I imagine that will be a different story since it is much smaller and moving without someone pushing it. Now you have me curious :) We will have to try it and report back!

  • Mick chewed the attachement to my DH shop vac and then proceeded to chew the cord completely off while we weren't looking. It's a good thing it wasn't plugged in. Although he did chew the printer cord and got a good zap

  • Tayda is intrigued by the vaccum cleaner. She will stay clear, but always alert about where it is going… she tries to stay about 2 feet away... and then she will STRIKE like a cobra! It's really funny.

    Lenny could care less.

  • EL D would watch the vacuum for a bit then attack it. It got to be a game with him.
Luny watches it warily then tries to get away from it if it gets too close (doesn't act scared just doesn't want to be near it) - even if he's up on the couch.

+1- This is what Shango does! He's not afraid of it, just endlessly curious- I think he tries to play with it!

  • Ooooooooooooooh my … dragging the 'surprise' around ... UGH!!! LOL

  • This is a funny thread. :) I have one who's kinda skiddish of the vacuum, one who really doesn't care, and one who loves to attack.

Mojo gets wound up when he hears the vacuum and will follow me around lunging at it. He is quite the character in all that he does. lol

I decided to make a video since he's too funny. I used the Dust Buster, as that is my favorite thing to tease him with. They were off in the other room but when I started it up Mojo came running as usual. Roxie the scaredy cat came to check it out but then left.

  • Kelli…too cute! :D

  • :D :D Did he finally get to chomp it to death?

  • @wizard:

:D :D Did he finally get to chomp it to death?

Nope, he doesn't care about it unless it's actually on. lol He'll take a couple stabs at it, then back off till you turn it on again. If I wave it around and stick it at him while it's turned off, he won't do anything. We keep it on the floor in the corner, so it's readily available if he ever wants to take out any stress on it. :)

  • Indy is terrified of the vacuum. I usually pick up all of his things before starting the process but when he was little it was a game. I put stuff in the crate, he takes it out. Finally I would get tired of following him around and just start vacuuming. He would run in terror and hide under the bed.

BUT his toys would still be out there, helpless, going to be eaten by the monster…gasp. So he would sneak to the door of the room I was in gather up all of his courage, wait until the vacuum and I turned our back, dash in and grab one toy. Repeat untill all toys have been rescued and are paying proper hommage to their basenji master. I used to call these his "rescue missions". This happened for about three months.

Now he still hates the vacuum but has figured out that I control it and when I pick his stuff up he should just leave it there. He still runs into another room but no longer cowers under something.

Yep, we saw that one, too (the coffeehouse one). I'm guessing the animator or someone involved with the show has really good taste in dog breeds! :)

My boss asked recently if I'd reached the point where I could leave my dog alone in the apartment outside the crate yet, and I told her that I didn't know if I ever would - he's a chewer and if I'm not there to watch what he's chewing, I don't know if I can trust him. She said "oh, so he can't be trained?" "He is trained, he's just a chewer." "Hmmmm…" was her reply, with a face that said "either you're a bad trainer, or he's a dumb dog." Happier note: took Paco to a dog-friendly restaurant last night, and the bartender yelled "Is that a basenji?!?!" from across the place, ran over to say hi, and went on and on about how her neighbor in the States bred them and how smart they were. :D

@etzbseder: I just had it re-assured that basenjis are partly just a 2-3 year old child. My roommates kid is visiting, and his mom is having the same arguments with their 3 year old son as I have with Medjai. "You just played, now you MUST go to the bathroom. I know you don't want to, but trust me, you have to." "Take a nap, you played all morning, and you always want to play later." They both will just look to see when the parent isn't looking and do what they're not supposed to. I always tell people that having a Basenji is like having a perpetual 2 yr old….so actually, you give Medjai more credit than I give mine, LOL.

When Blaze use to dig, my dad would yell, scream, throw things to no end. It didn't help. Then mom decided to "improve" the landscape. Everyday Blaze would dig a hole, she would go out there, lay some waterproof fabric, pull some larger rocks around it, and put water in it. Blaze would come out the next day to his new favourite hole, and find the water. He'd pace around for a bit, then find a new spot to dig. He did this five times, then he stopped. He hasn't dug since. He's also stopped the couch digging, but we have no claim to that. He was sneaky. He'd unzip the back of the cushion, dig out the back half of the foam, hide his rope toy or stuffed toy in it, then zip it back up. We had some lumpy cushions

Our intent was to only be a foster home for Zeus. All in all, I think things would have improved with time. I talked with his new parents this morning and he is 90 lbs of happy! :D
