Gypsy update

Off Topic

  • I took Gypsy to the vet today for a check-up – you may recall she began having mobility difficulty this summer and I was afraid for a while that I was going to have to put her down.
Well.... today x-rays showed that her spine is in pretty good shape -- little to no sign of arthritis!, her blood work came back great -- slightly elevated glucose, but she had just eaten, liver numbers lower than the summer, etc. Just very healthy blood.

What he's thinking she has is Canine Degenerative Myelopathy, which is not treatable, though vitamin supplements can help, but it is also not painful {except to watch} and she will slowly lose more and more control over her hind section until she is finally unable to walk. She is progressing more slowly than he would have expected -- not much change in the last six months -- and so I am hopeful that we have several good months left in the ol' gal.

The main thing is, she is in great health overall, NOT in pain, in good spirits, and doing okay!

  • Yay for Gypsy!!!

  • Hopefully it will continue to be a very, very slow progression… that is good news. By the way, how old is Gypsy?

  • She will be 15 this Spring. {She's my golden mix}

  • @JazzysMom:

The main thing is, she is in great health overall, NOT in pain, in good spirits, and doing okay!

And that is the most important thing. I'm glad she is doing well.

  • I'm glad your young-at-heart gal Gypsy is doing so well. May you have MANY more months together.

  • Just a reminder…and an intro for those I haven't shown her off to yet :D

This is my lovely lady Gypsy. She looks a little different now -- the vet suggested I cut back all that beautiful hair on her back legs and under the tail because she doesn't squat very gracefully any more and was getting urine on her hair. I'd been trying to keep it clean, but he said they can get skin irritations akin to diaper rash, so.... off it came. I'm not real good with scissors though and now it looks ridiculous.

  • Yay Gypsy! Glad you have her for a while longer…and that she has a good quality of life. JM...those pics are so sweet! :)

  • That is wonderful news, what a wonderful old gal….. and I am sure that she doesn't care what her "tail feathers" used to look like...gggg

  • Awwww… she is a pretty lady!

  • She is a very pretty grand old lady. A credit to you to for keeping her golden years so happy, as she looks like a happy loved dog. May you have her for a very long time

  • Good news for Gypsy!

What a great looking old golden lady!!! :D

  • What a good looking "old fart" - hope the two of you have many good times yet.

I'm so jealous! I haven't been able to ride in ages. Super expensive in the city to own a horse and hard to find a place that let's you actually lease a horse… walking trail rides get to be a bore after a while. She looks so pretty and great work with her :) If she needs exercise cause of your work schedule, have you tried seeing if there's an equestrian program in your area with a student willing to do some riding? Sometimes they get credit if it matches up with their program or they might like the chance just to practice their schooling :) Unless you're planning to be the only rider, just thought I'd suggest it. Keep up the good work!

Maya has caught a pigeon out of the air once, she jumped about 4ft from a standstill and grabbed it, then didnt seem to know what to do with it! That was when she was just a puppy too..! So i am very careful if i do have her out with the birds (very rarely), she is kept on a very short lead and not left out of my sight for a second. She has never attempted to grab at them but she is a bit to fascinated by them for my liking..! :D Ruby will look like this as an adult: [image: 2362033537_a4abc5e17b.jpg] [image: 3534770357_90b7ed532f.jpg?v=0] Not a whole lot different to how she is now, she will lose the blue ring around her neck and instead will have a red ring going around the top of her neck and just a blue nape instead of the blue ring. She will also lose the black feathers in her red chest. Really she will just have clearer colours than she does now, the baby colours are not as bright and vibrant and have a lot of black/blue feathers mixed in with the other colours.

@Ninabeana26: Also good to hear such a positive update about your furkids! How ever did you get to the point where you could leave dash uncrated during the day while you are gone?!? I want to get Dallas like that buy I worry that he will destory everything he can get to in time… Well, we didn't have much of a choice. He would freak out so bad in a regular crate he would make his feet bleed and pee everywhere and the expen he learned to lift it up and tip it so he could sneak underneath. So we decided it was a good time to try it and he has been happy ever since.

The more feedback the better. I really want a site that is useful for people who are just starting to research the breed.
