Ruby (Parrot) Update

Off Topic

  • I dont think i've done a Ruby Update for a while so thought i would. She is still growing  I thought she would be fully grown by now (9 months) but apparently they can take 2-3 years to be fully grown physically and for their adult feathers to come through. She's going to be gorgeous when she's done growing though :D

    Anyway, here she is!!

  • What a beautiful colours she has, pretty parrot girl :D.

  • Ruby is so pretty, I love her colours:D

  • Beautiful! I love parrots. I have a senegal called Pepe, had him 13 years now. Used to have a blue crowned conure and a little conure years ago. Could have gone on and on collecting them, once you get the bug it's hard to stop lol.

She is looking so cute..her colors are grand..thank you for sharing.

I know what you mean, I have 5 parrots in all :o Two of them are conures - I just love those little guys!! Lovely fiesty characters :D At one point when I was doing a lot of rescue work and fostering parrots temporarily we had about 20 in the house at any one time  Thats too much to live with though!

Senegals are lovely little birds, the eyes freak me out a little bit though  You must post some pictures of Pepe :D

Ta for the replies!! I am told that her colours will be more vibrant and clearer in a couple of years. All the black bits will disappear as her adult patterns come through - cant wait! :D

  • I'll post some pics of Pepe soon. He/she is a fiesty character. Not even hand tame to be honest. I suspect he was wild caught as he has never been easy to touch. Doesn't bite but is very hesitant. He comes out, flies around and settles on his cage for the night. Love him to bits though. Milo goes nuts when he flies about lol!
Had ****atiels first and a splendid parakeet for a bit, from a unwanted home! would have loved an African Grey but dogs took president.

  • Looking forward to the pics!! :D

I have a pair of ****atiels, one is lovely, the other is evil! He's like a pitbull when he bites, just wont let go lol! I hate him! I had an african grey years ago, she escaped out of a door one day though :( Lesson learned very quickly there…

Maya tends to just sit and watch the birds when they are flying around, but i know if i took my eyes off her for a second she'd have grabbed them! We fell asleep on the sofa a couple of weeks ago and I woke up with Maya on my feet asleep and Ruby on Maya's head preening her!! Ruby had managed to unlatch her cage and get out  Had to very quietly grab Ruby without waking Maya up - luckily she will sleep through anything :D

  • Ruby is a beautiful looking lorikeet. Yes, her colours will enrich as she gets older. I find it interesting that there are a number of parrot owners on this basenji site. Maybe we all like more unique pets?

My two ****atoos and my brown head (similar to a senegal) are all sleeping quietly right now. Then in the early evening comes a feast of sounds - screeches, whistles, cricket type sounds, it runs the gamut. It might drive others crazy but I find it delightful.

  • Here is Pepe. A stern little bird with quite a character as most parrots have.

    He/she is lovely Thersesa:D

My inlaws have a 7 year old african grey that we will be inheriting when they pass:eek: Not really looking forward to it to be honest as he doesn't like anyone apart from my father in law.

  • Pepe is beautiful! :D Thanks for sharing!

African Grey's can be bloody vicious!!! I had a couple of rescues in that had lost their owners and they did not like new people at all, I got some nasty bites from them!! But others were really friendly and loved everyone…!

  • Maya and Lukris - what great pictures. I think Ruby's colour s are gorgeous. How will her adult colours be? Do you show your birds?

I've always found my basenjis good with pet birds unless they (birds) are nervous. However I must admit that they have caught birds on the wing even though they ignore them on the ground.

  • Maya has caught a pigeon out of the air once, she jumped about 4ft from a standstill and grabbed it, then didnt seem to know what to do with it! That was when she was just a puppy too..! So i am very careful if i do have her out with the birds (very rarely), she is kept on a very short lead and not left out of my sight for a second. She has never attempted to grab at them but she is a bit to fascinated by them for my liking..! :D

Ruby will look like this as an adult:

Not a whole lot different to how she is now, she will lose the blue ring around her neck and instead will have a red ring going around the top of her neck and just a blue nape instead of the blue ring. She will also lose the black feathers in her red chest. Really she will just have clearer colours than she does now, the baby colours are not as bright and vibrant and have a lot of black/blue feathers mixed in with the other colours.

This is why I hate posting. I wasn't mad at you either, just didn't think you understood the process. We've all had bad experiences which is why we need to learn from others. There are quicker methods (think wringing their neck-literally) but that's not something I could do. Chopping off the head I have no problem with when the bird is older, but little chicks and ducklings get to me. I know better when going to the vet now, but, at that time, I thought the vet knew what she was doing-obviously not.(with the dog that she blew four veins) This dog was 17 1/2 years old and didn't deserve that at the end of life. He may have been struggling, but you would think after she blew the first vein she would have sedated him then rather that keep trying. Yes, I was with the dog and was not happy with her explanation. There was no reason for it. There are still a lot of people (they just don't admit to it, because they don't know a better method? or just couldn't be bothered? Who knows?) who still use the freezer method. Am I cruel, I can be when I have to be, but I just prefer a simpler method. And I am well aware of the rocks in the sack method. My father was from the old country (hungary) and could be quite cruel. They were never pets or living things-simply livestock-but he wasn't a nice person anyway. As for the vet not putting an animal to sleep? Lived it. I had one dog who was off the wall. Something was simply crossed upstairs neurologically. He started having seizures at about 18 months, but came out of them viciously and could never settle down. The vet insisted I sign him over to him and if he deemed it necessary, he would put him to sleep since he was so young. Yes, there was a euthanasia contract to that effect. The vet kept him for a few days, phoned me up and asked me how I lived with him so long. He could not believe how bad he was. He did put him to sleep after that. But these are a couple of reasons why I am so leary of vets. I've had a few bad experiences with them.

I'm so jealous! I haven't been able to ride in ages. Super expensive in the city to own a horse and hard to find a place that let's you actually lease a horse… walking trail rides get to be a bore after a while. She looks so pretty and great work with her :) If she needs exercise cause of your work schedule, have you tried seeing if there's an equestrian program in your area with a student willing to do some riding? Sometimes they get credit if it matches up with their program or they might like the chance just to practice their schooling :) Unless you're planning to be the only rider, just thought I'd suggest it. Keep up the good work!

Rita Jean, That is so funny. I once had a bunny and it jumped into my daughter's parakeet cage…it looked bery confused and then jumped out again. Jess, what a beautiful bird. Are they good with children, do you know? My kids love birds, we have two zebrafinches and they make lovely noise, but that is about all they do.
