AAGH! My mini blinds!

Basenji Talk
  • Ok, so Lady got out of her kennel today while we were at a friends house. I'll admit, the latch is broken, but I'm still suprised she got out because we wired it shut. Anyway, if we leave the house without her, she gets upset and tries to look out the windows. Well, she completely ruined 6 sets of mini blinds. She didn't mean to do it, she just had to crawl through them to get to the window. And you know how they like to stand on the window sills! Lady also went poop in my daughter's room, which is a huge mess. I don't know why, but when Lady poops, she squats and walks at the same time. So, by the time I got everything cleaned up, I had 3 1/2 trash bags of toys and stuff that she got dirty. She even managed to get it on the wall and the CURTAINS! (She accidentally got poo on her hip and then got up on the window sill I guess.) I just told my daughter "I bet you wish you'd cleaned your room, huh?" We took Lady out to potty and play, put her back in the kennel (making sure it was latched better this time) and went to WAl-Mart to buy more blinds and a new metal cage. I bought the biggest one they had because I don't want her to be cramped. Anyway, that's my funny Lady story for today.:D

  • Oh, goodness. Bless you for considering it a funny story. Hang in there. Displaced basenjis can be quite challenging until they feel secure and trusting again. We lost a set of blinds (but not 6  ) ourselves early on. We actually do better not crating ours (they have crates but are never locked in), but I wouldn't want to recommend that to anyone without knowing their pups.

    @sarahlorrain:

I don't know why, but when Lady poops, she squats and walks at the same time. :D

Our Bongo is also part of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Poop ('cept he's a boy, so Brotherhood might be more apt). We have a basenji group that meets once a month and several of them do this…sort of makes picking up after them a twisted kind of Easter Egg hunt. :p

  • Any way you can leave the blinds up and bedroom door shut, in case she gets out again?
Just my first thougth when I read this.

  • Ahhhhh, a broken cage! Don't you know it's a challenge to a Basenji?? Sorry, but I can just imagine the mess. Yes, I am laughing as I can just imagine it. Lady just walking along the window ledge leaving a streak a mile wide. I have to laugh because I've been there myself. I do empathize with the cleanup though.

  • Ahh, brings back memories - my first basenji would get up in the window bay between the flower pots and then try to get through the blinds. They were metal so I was able to bend them back into place (at least mostly).
EL D hasn't tried this at all (thank goodness).

  • I would probably shut the door to my bedroom if I had a door on it. (It had a pane of glass in in and one of the kids slammed it too hard one day.) I hate leaving her in a cage at any time during the day, but it's never longer than 2-3 hours. I stay at home with the kids, so it's not 8 hours straight or anything. She sleeps in it at night. That's why I bought the biggest one they had.
According to the box, it's recommended for Huskies and dogs of that size so I figured it would be OK. I usually put a rawhide chew or something in there so she doesn't get too bored.

  • sorry, but what is a "mini blind"?

    Regards,
    Esther

  • You know, window coverings –- small vinyl horizontal slats. Very inexpensive and easy to ruin. Here's a pic.

  • And Basenjis do that SO well…. ruin mini blinds

  • aaaha, now I see. Thanx for explaining.

I had the same problem, we had them out of Aluminium and the dogs managed to bend the ends so they looked like a comb….

    Esther

  • LOL … oooooooooooooh my ... LOL

We have sheers on our windows. What for I don't know ... if Bisa can get to one [some are high on the wall and doesn't go there] she does and heaven help the sheers! LOL

  • Good luck Sanuye!! I have found window sheers are just another version of basenji toilet paper/kleenex when it comes to play things.

  • Zahra ruined the blinds in my living room and I just recently replaced them with Roman shades that were on sale at J.C. Penney. So far so good, she is able to get under or around them without destorying them.

  • Blinds, dinning room chair, 3 tv remotes, 1 Nintendo DS, corner of the couch, comic books, and my glasses. Also she walk poops!

  • So far she has not torn them down but you can tell the sheers have been 'fooled with' by the threads being 'misplaced' in them. So far so good with her NOT tearing them … Time will tell though. She has been with us eight months and only in the past month has she REALLY begun to show the Basenji traits ... LOL ... now that she is comfy here.

  • LOL … what a dog! Gotta love 'em!!

We use ones from Rukka. Not sure if they’re available everywhere but they are they best ones we have tried (others always fell off, especially in deep snow). I think having two Velcro closures on each sock has been key. I also prefer the soft shell ones as our B seems to accept them more and they don’t twist as much as the ones with a hard sole. Here are the ones I am referring to: https://rukkapets.com/paw-wear/thermal-shoes-black

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

We are also finding that Kipawa baroos when he sees us after we have been out of the home. I think he is trying to tell us something like "how dare you leave me".
